Belly is nominating for a position on the Board, and would probably bring some good attributes to it. Good to have changing of the guard. Maybe it's just me but sometimes I think he's come across as bit indifferent about the club.

We do go on about commentators and such being biased towards clubs but in this instance I think a bit more bias towards Freo would be a good idea.

They rig these elections like pros. Get a Mark Duffield to herald in the ex-player who intends to nominate for the election, nice and early, so everyone else gets the message that there's no point running. Then no one else nominates and you don't have to pay for an election.

Ever since I noticed a feeling on this board of antipathy towards Bell, our past captain, I've listened intently everytime he commentates a Freo or Weagles game or if I happen to catch him on the radio during his broadcast. I've heard him have Luke M on his show as a guest and regularly talks up past Freo players. Yes, I've also heard him talk about some rumblings about the 2006 campaign, but to me, more insight is better than less.

I'm assuming some of the feeling towards Bell is that he doesn't defend Freo enough?

Freo doesn't need defending, but Bell has often gone in the other direction. He's been vocal in the past about its shortcomings during his time there. Plus he was embarrassed by the jumper that he played in. Fans don't tend to think fondly of captains that crap on their own club.

Spot on Drubbing. I thought as a commentator, his often bias opinion is not something you'd expect from an ex-captain of our club. I can understand people like Lagdon, Hackdorn, Duffield etc, but not Belly. I'd more inclined to vote for Haselby.

Peter Bell was cut by Freo, won a premiership with North, then returned to Freo, only after North botched the chance to keep him. The FFC isn’t everything to him the way it might be to blokes like McManus who only knew one club, or blokes who started elsewhere, but who thrived at Freo having been given an opportunity by the club. The relationship between Bell and Freo was more transactional, and it’s only natural that he has a more complicated relationship with the club than those blokes - but it can be a little jarring.

I can see some merit in having some ex-players on the board, but how many do we need? It’s not like the board picks the team. What we need is people bringing different strengths and voices to the board to help guide the club. Can anyone tell me what Bell would bring to the board that Ben Allen, Stephen O’Reilly and Peter Mann aren’t already providing? In my opinion, it’s rapidly turning into a gig for the boys, and I don’t think that is a recipe for good stewardship.
