Apparently to be good media fodder for the plethora of foodie/singing shows that pollute our TV channels, competitors need to have a back story that will tug on our heart strings. It seems that this obsession is now required by our football telecasters. Every weekend seems to be connected with a personal tragedy. I'll stress at this point that there have been some very sad events this year and I have no problems with players showing their very real emotions, however, I am well and truly over the exploitation of their circumstances by media that see value in using these circumstances in an effort to add value to their product. Cases in point, close ups of Jack Riewoldt's salute to his cousin today and Luke Darcy's repeated reference to Adelaide's tragic circumstances, before, during and after last night's game. I think some of these guys have been watching too many commercial 'current affairs' programs and are hoping that a coach or player will crack and shed some tears. Sure, mention Adelaide's situation and the loses suffered by NicNat and the Riewoldts and others, but show some respect and dignity and stop exploiting these events.
