Kneeing Controversy
On Monday July 13th 2015 Sam Mitchell was found guilty by the AFL's Match review Panel of having kneed the right thigh of Fremantle Docker Nathan Fyfe during the second quarter of the previous days game and was fined $1000 for his offense.[8] The media then brought to light other kneeing incidents involving Mitchell, those being the kneeing of Adelaide Crows Captain Taylor Walker in the round 12 game and the kneeing of Greater Western Sydney's Ryan Griffen in round 6 of the 2015 season. [9]Another kneeing incident surfaced of Mitchell deliberately kneeing North Melbourne defender Scott Thompson behind the play. The video shows Mitchell walking up to an unsuspecting Thompson and deliberately kneeing him in the left thigh.[10] Media reports from 2008 show that an opposition club expressed concerns to the AFL about Sam Mitchell's & team mate Luke Hodges kneeing of opponents.[11] At the time of the Round 15 Fyfe kneeing incident there was a widely held belief in media circles that Nathan Fyfe was leading the race to win the 2015 Brownlow Medal. Although some saw it as a promotional exercise betting agency Crownbet paid out early on all bets placed on Fyfe to win the Brownlow prior to May 28th with 15 games remaining in the season such was his early season form.[12] Fyfe was able to take the field for the following 2 games after the Sam Mitchell kneeing incident but struggled to have the same dominant impact on games he had shown to that point. Fyfe subsequently missed the following 2 games, Rounds 18 & 19, due to a groin issue which he publicly attributed to the corked thigh he received when kneed by Mitchell. Explaining that the thigh injury was causing him to compensate his running gait thereby placing additional stresses on his groin.[13] Fyfe returned to play in rounds 20 & 21, again without any great impact he had shown prior to the Mitchell kneeing incident, but was then struck down with further leg related complications. At the time of writing Fyfe is listed as being unavailable for the last 2 rounds of the season due to shin splints.[14] Only time will tell if the missed games & subsequent reduced capacity to impact games will play a part in hindering Fyfe's bid to secure the coveted 2015 Brownlow Medal. Interestingly Mitchell himself is considered a leading contender to feature in the 2015 Brownlow Medal voting.[15]
