Maybe the journo should have replied to Roly's question "Confidence is something I am not".
The journo was an inexperienced wimp. To go and say Roly is a bully ... gee whiz. It's a pressure cooker environment for the coaches and the journos and if you can't respond to a question like "what is confidence?" without it looking like bullying, then it says more about the journo than the coach.

Give Roly a break, the media doesn't, so surely we can now and then. He's one of, if not the best media coach going around and rarely says anything they can ping on him ... as much as they would like to and try to.
Gone to bigfooty where there's fewer Docker Haters.

Roly often looks like he wants to be chilled but often throws spears, particularly at shrill voiced journo's. Always difficult to say how one would act in the same circumstances, but I think post game he is at his edgiest, which when we lose is not surprising. He basically puts them all on notice ie he controls the situation.

Lyon was a sour puss after a loss, not unlike Malthouse after virtually every Carlton game he coached.

Perhaps it was a dumb and naive question from a junior reporter, but Ross didn't have to respond like that. He also did it to Shane McInness after the Geelong game 2 years ago.

In his defence, having to answer stupid questions posed by someone 20 years your junior after a loss must be quite a tedious part of the job.

I went and had a look at it again and I reckon many are reading Lyon's response wrong. It actually wasn't all that bad, I think people get flummoxed by the questioning of something that they might hold to be self-evident, but coming at it from a different angle it perhaps shows that it isn't. He actually did get around to answering that particular question and continued to interact with the journo who asked it, without any malice. Even having a good-natured laugh about it right at the end.

Are you confident you can improve in time for the finals? is not a stupid question. It's the only question worth asking.

Absolutely was the only answer I wanted to hear. I did not want to hear Ross Lyon attempt to humiliate someone in the workplace. It's a flaw in his game that he needs to work on.

Of course "Absolutely" is the easy answer and everyone can go away happy. But I'd say the answer he gave shows that he has been dwelling on what confidence is exactly and what he can do to facilitate it in the team.

If his intention was really to humiliate the journo, then he would of left him hanging as he struggled to answer, ended it with a sneering look, or pick him up on his "cinnamon" stumble. Instead he gave a prompt to him, answered his question and continued to take questions from him. I really think it shows this is something he's been giving it a bit of thought to and when asked thought it might be a chance to bandy it about. That may have been his biggest misjudgement.

J: So you're confident you can get to that level come finals time?

R: What's confident? What is that? If you can tell me what confidence is then you'll probably help me understand that. What's confidence?

J: Well have you got belief in your players that they can get to that level again?

R: Yeah, I've got belief in my players that they can get to that level again.

He gave no thought to the question at all.

Lyon seems to lack confidence at the moment.

He's not the Lone Ranger there and if we don't dominate Melbourne, lacking confidence will take on a whole new meaning.

I think Roly might really be a "The glass is the wrong bloody size you idiot" type of person

He's more subtle than that.

Do you call that a glass. How long you been picking out glasses? Do you know where it came from. Do you know what you want it for? Really, two hours to find a glass and that's the best you can come up with? That's brilliant Shane.

Really Shane, the transcript again? So all that just played out in about three seconds? But anyways... it’s clear he’s given that sort of thing a lot of thought over time hence the “Confidence is just an emotion…” line from a ways back. And really, he is spot on with his thinking here. But having given something (of which people generally take for granted) a lot of thought/understanding then you can almost seem like you’re taking the **** when you start talking about it because your thinking is on a different plane to most. As I said before, wrong place, wrong time, but “bullying”? Nope.
