I've been thinking......
With all the whinging about the state of the game, our style of play etc, what effect would it have if you had unlimited interchanges and more people on the bench - like say 10 people?
Think about it:
i. Would force coaches to seriously think about balancing between having great players stay on the field for longer vs having lesser quality players rotating through
ii. Encourage more running and open play as players can exert more effort and run further and longer
iii. Would make the coaches really think about who they have on the field at any given point. At the moment it is the stock standard 2 x big forwards, 2 x big backmen, 1 x ruckmen and the rest midfielders. You could go through a phase in the game where you totally change that makeup
iv. A chance to prolong careers / bring on more younger players
Downsides:
i. More fresh people could actually lead to more congestion
ii. Could start to look like American football
iii. I know - less talent spread around, equalization where good teams stock up on talent etc etc
I know, status quo. It is OK as is. Don't change anything. It's been this way for 100 years etc.
Just a thought....
