Good to see Mike filling his time constructively. I was just thinking the other day, I'd love to know what Mike Sheehan thinks was the best VFL team of the 1960's.

This is what happens when you only have one Victorian team in contention for the flag. First they whing about "the state of the game', then they bring back The Winners, then they start coming up with combined team from the VFL, next thing you know they'll want to bring then Lions back to Fitzroy.

Has Mike Brady been wheeled out with a new song yet?

On one point I concur - talent pool too thin - 12 teams (max 14) play each other twice.
Too many players that are only getting an AFL gig to make up the numbers.

The biggest problem with 18 teams is not the thinning of the talent pool. Its the time between premierships. If we ever really attain the magical true equalisation then statistically you could currently expect a premiership every 18 years. If there were 12 clubs this would come down to a much more manageable wait of 12 years. If the moons and planets don't align during your premiership window or you just suffer a crucial injury at the business end supporters could foreseeably go a whole lifetime or at least 50 years without seeing their club win it. The AFL should never have brought those last two expansion clubs in and I agree with Sheahan they should get rid of some other clubs..... or at least allow them to go bankrupt.
This lack of hope and extreme lengths between flag success for some of the lower placed clubs is the games single biggest problem and the main reason there is a general lack of interest. I mean unless you are Hawks, Dockers, Egirls, Swans or Richmond I mean who really gives a toss?? Come back and check to see how your team is doing in 5 years.

Who cares? Its an irrelevent stat.
The only teams that should be credited with premierships is from after 1990.
The Bulldogs 1954 premiership and Saints 1966 premiership is about as relevent as Perth Football Clubs premierships in the 60s

Great points D1 you are absolutely spot on. It always amazes me that a national competition has kept the Vic medal for fairest and best and the Vic premiership cup as the ultimate prize in the sport. Surely when the game became the AFL their should have been a new medal and cup minted to represent all the states and territories not just the Vics.
I know the old argument that WCE, Brissie and the Swans all joined the VFL originally will be thrown up, but we have moved well beyond that now. As I like to point out to Vic fans who bang on about their clubs 10 or 15 premiership cups (most of which were won prior to the AFL existing) if were looking at premierships in a historical sense then Port Adelaide or Freos combined flags from Old Easts and Sowfs eclipse anything their clubs have in the cabinet. You cant compare those urban state based comps to the teams as they stand now.
Maybe when those last apron strings are cut from the VFL days and the GF is played interstate on a rostered basis we will have a truly national competition.
