For those of you with access to pay TV, Gerard Neesham is on Open Mike tonight.

Could be worth a look.

He is the reason I became a Docker. Class act all the way.
We may not have won too many games under his watch but they were fun days!

That was absolutely worth a look grub. What a great bloke. Super intelligent, humble, and has given so much back in particular to indigenous youth.
Would have loved to have seen him coach for longer at Freo and with a better team.

Pretty much reinforced what most WA footy people will acknowledge - a class act and somebody that we should all be proud of. I'm rapt he is part of the Freo story.
Gee we need more people like this in the world.

He's one of my sporting heros and I jumped ship from The Slime to the Dockers the minute I heard Neesham was the appointed coach ... so Thank you, Thank you, Thank you Mr Gerard Neesham.

Even as a Garlic Muncher supporter since the age of about 6 didn't stop me from admiring the man's football brain and abilities.

I've often wondered why I've never seen him appear on The Marngrook Footy show given his enormous contributions to Aboriginal football.
Gone to bigfooty where there's fewer Docker Haters.

I liked how he shot poor old Mike down when Mike spoke about the perception in Melbourne that he was cocky when he arrived with Freo... and his reply was, with a hearty dose of scoff, that no-one in Melbourne knew him then. Mike tried to argue that and Gerard really could have hammered him with the myopia that infests the Melbourne media but he'd already shot him down with one that went over his head, two would have been unfair.

4000 kids in school programs under Clontarf nationwide. That's outstanding. Absolutely outstanding. The guy really should be in the Hall of Fame, he's the greatest innovator the game's seen.

Quite impressive away from footy as well. Made quite the impression - as I slipped off into noddyland last night I couldn't help thinking further.
Everybody knows there are problems out there and unless it's on your doorstep most of us leave it to others to deal with. Sure we buy a raffle ticket occasionally.
Neesham is one of those people we rely on to make us feel better. Fred Hollows was another one. They are thinkers and doers and as I head into work this morning I feel rather redundant.

I recall footy purists condemning the style of play Fremantle played. Chip the ball around and keep possession. A trait of water polo which Neesham represented Australia in. As much as it was ridiculed, it was Kevin Sheedy who adopted a similar style. Now all coached are searching other sports to get an advantage.
Neesham truly is an innovator in many ways.

And keeping possession, going sideways and backwards to do so is the rolled gold standard of most coaches these days.

I respect Gerard too and love what he did for the club in trying conditions.
I still cant get my head around the Mcleod decision though.
He had never seen him play but somebody in the organisation thought it apt that Gerard interview him.
Gerard said Mcleod didnt want to be there and he basically acted his way to what he wanted - being a adelaide crow.
Surely, that was more of a reason to try and talk to somebody that had seen him play.
Puzzling really

It's not complicated. He had to put a list of 50 odd players together in 6 months with very few resources and passed on a kid that didn't want to play for him.

The fact that McLeod was still offended by Needham when he retired tells you that McLeod's ego wouldn't have survived in Fremantle anyway.

McLeod wanted to play footy in Adelaide. Neesham knew it. You have to remember that drafting was a really poor science in 1994 and there was hardly any vision available of the kids that were nominated.

Fremantle as a club was also poorly resourced in terms of talent scouts and other administrative positions.

The Dockers made a lot of mistakes because they weren't full of the best Western Australians like the Eagles or South Australians like the Crows and not an existing club like Port Adelaide.

They certainly weren't given the resources and support like the Suns and Giants.

Mcleod probably wanted to kick it long. Gerard was having none of that. It would be like Zac Dawson trying to mark and play on. You'd have Lyon lining up a bunch of phones just so he could kill them all.

I haven't seen the Open Mike interview yet but I look forward to it. My favourite Neesham memory dates back to his first game when I ran out to get an autograph and he said "you don't want my autograph ... I had a bloody awful game."
