Freo66, immediately before the incident, an Essendon player ran past and gave him a bit of an elbow to the body. A cheap shot. Mitchell reacted the way he did to this.

BTW, in all the vision I've seen, Mitchell talks about how inappropriate his response was, how he wish he didn't do it, and how it's not a good look, and blah blah blah. But unless I'm mistaken, he never actually said the words "sorry" or "apology". There's a big difference between thinking it was inappropriate and wishing he never did it and actually saying sorry for it.

I can't be held accountable for what I do out there

Mitchell gave an interview with Fox Footy after the game when he expressed his regret, saying it was a bad look for the game.

Lewis did support his fellow premiership midfielder, saying incidents like these came when you played at the very highest intensity.

"If you want to play AFL at this level sometimes you step over the line," he said.

"You don't go out deliberately to get reported or physically target players but sometimes it just happens in the heat of the battle.

"Sometimes you can't control yourself out there.

Deregister them. Deregister them now. They're a hazard to themselves, let alone anyone else innocently going about the business of football.

Good to see that, while Sam gets to walk because of his Standing In Victorian Football, anyone who repeats his action will be dealt with under the AFL's anti-vilification protocols.

Vilification of drug cheats being totally unacceptable, of course.
