Been flat-out at work, but do have some comments on this - and thanks to Merc for opening the conversation.

What I love about the DuFFLe is that:

i) It is the closest fantasy game to an actual footy game there is.
ii) the simple scoring base, makes it very very easy to follow along with the progress of your team while watching the game or viewing the basic stats.

The game of AFL has changed significantly since this was first played. As such, some of the need to select players in positions that they actually play has been lost.

So first of all, I absolutely agree wholeheartedly that forwards get 4pts per goal and 1pt per point.

Secondly, very rarely does a backline player get selected in the backline. Did Josh Gibson or Alex Rance even get drafted this year?

On the current backman scoring regime, these are the top ten averaging players so far in 2016 (from Merc's stats):
Nick Riewoldt mid/fwd; Jack Grimes back; Rupert Wills back; Zach Merrett mid/fwd; Rory Sloane mid; Dayne Zorko mid/fwd; Liam Shiels mid/fwd; James Kelly back/mid; Sam Docherty back; Edward Curnow tagger.
Not many actual backman in that lot.

Top ten averaging players if tackles where worth 2pts:
Rupert Wills back; Liam Shiels mid/fwd; Matt Priddis mid; Rory Sloane mid; Brady Grey mid; Dayne Zorko mid/fwd; Zach Merrett mid/fwd; Edward Curnow tagger; Tom Rockliff mid; Jack Viney mid.
Not many actual backman in that lot.

BUT, when MARKS are worth 2pts and tackles 1pt, look at the what happens to the top ten averages:
Nick Riewoldt mid/fwd; Sam Docherty back; Heath Shaw back; Jack Grimes back; Alex Rance back; Ben Lennon back; Brendan Whitecross back; Kade Simpson back; Ben Reid back/Fwd; Josh Gibson back
WOW - actual backman, including fullbacks such as the best in the comp like Gibson and Rance.

So, to make backman like an actual backman, to give you something else to think about when drafting (instead of throwing excess mids down back) and to create some score parity and add value to the back, then Marks should be two points and tackles one point. It's a no-brainer.

Just for the record, current points scoring for mids and rucks is perfectly fine IMO and does not need changing or complicating.

I was after just that sort of result, Nelson, but was too lazy to work out the finer detail. I had assumed that tackles would have made the difference. I was wrong. There. I admit it. I got something wrong this year.

I would be really keen for backmen to be drafted and played in the backline of the DuFFLe teams because they give you a winning score.

Sounds good to me :D

That's where I went completely wrong in the draft... I picked players for their positions eg McVeigh, Boyd, Suckling, as backmen as that's their positions as listed on AFL. I should've taken more notice of the DuFFle scoring before the draft!

You will still have to choose your backman wisely FD. I wouldn't be selecting Zac Dawson if marks were worth 2pts. But Rance, undrafted this year, could suddenly be a second rounder! It's the Way To Go.

We should have knockout finals, too. More cutthroat. 1 v 8, 2 v 7, 3 v 6, 4 v 5 etc.

We could do that, Dman. And then we can run until Round 20.

The Richmond Cup would be tricky, but I could construct something.

I'm liking Nelson's conclusions on backmen. Not convinced about 4 points for a goal - there are relatively few high-scoring forwards and it would widen the gap to the detriment of those who don't manage to snag one.

Perhaps forwards could get points for marks and leave the other bit alone. Or no points for behinds so there are still only two stats that count and accuracy becomes more valuable.

Two bobs worth on all comments:

Suggested Scoring changes:

i) Backs – 2pts mark, 1pt tackle

ii) Fwds – 4pts per goal, 1pt per point – although I like the suggestion of points for goals only.

There is some suggestion that there are very few quality forwards that kick big bags and increasing their points would create a massive differential between the best and the worst. Again, using Merc’s stats, I can tell you that a player has kicked 5 goals or more 56 times so far this season. These 56 times were by 31 different players. The stuttering fool managed it 6 times, while Eddie, Jezza, Buddy and, amazingly Tim Membrey have each managed it 4 times. So, even the stand out quality forwards are not consistently producing massive forward scores week in week out. So, I am in favour of 4pts per goal, nothing for a miss.

Other suggestions:

iii) A premiership point for being coach of the week – it’s a no from me.

iv) Wildcard of 2pts per goal for any non-forward – too complicated, it’s a no from me.

v) A ladder of Merc’s tipping including the margin – Absolutely, bring it on.

vi) Breakdown of a DuFFLers scores by position as a percentage – Great idea, perhaps Merc could do this after Rounds 6, 12 and 18.

vii) I do like the idea of a knockout finals, instead of the current system and extending the home and away season by one round.

viii) No egirls selectable or worth less points – it’s a no from me, the more DuFFLers with good teams the better, and to have Slammo and D_Man not be competitive would dilute the comp too much.

The list and trading:

Many thoughtful ideas floating around on these issues.

ix) Firstly, I think that increasing team sizes to 16 is the Way To Go.

x) If this is done, it provides a great opportunity to rid ourselves of the STC’s. They suck, they’re difficult to administer and painful. If we had 16 man teams, we could decide to have no STC’s and during the bye rounds each DuFFLer names whatever team they are able to and only the top 5 scorers for their team will be counted in their score. With 16 man teams, we should all be able to field at least 5 players every bye round. Even if you could only name 3 mids and a ruck, it may be good enough to beat the other teams 2 backs, 2 forwards and a mid. I like this idea a lot, possibly my best idea.

xi) I don’t like the idea of trades becoming a willy nilly exercise. It’s a big no from me in terms of unlimited trading. Limited trading was designed to replace lower end draft pick duds with new talent never seen before, thus not usually drafted. I hated that my finals team this year looked nothing like the best eight that I drafted. I was particularly decimated by injury, but would hate for a team to trade eight players one week to take advantage of say, an Adelaide v Brisbane game and then trade them all back the next week, assuming they aren’t stolen. I like the current trading and lti rules as they stand including the 30 June deadline, but do think teams should be increased to 16.

xii) I do, however, like the idea of trades between coaches, perhaps only once overall though, not once per couple as per the suggestion. This could be additional to the 3 trades. And most certainly not done within, say, six weeks of the finals.

xiii) I like the idea of the reverse draft based on the previous year’s finish, with any newbies going first. It would have to be the adjusted placings after finals, so that if a team finished the H+A 5th, but then lost their first final, I they would end up in 7th or 8th place for reverse draft purposes and receive pick 8 or 9 instead of 11. Having said that, if it continues to be drawn from a hat, there is no need for any live streaming, I have complete and utter unwavering belief in Merc's honesty and integrity.

Commence your pondering.

Some interesting and great ideas kicking around, 2 points for a defenders mark seems like a good change, and an extra point for a goal as well. Anything to reduce the reliance on a good Ruckman (although I don't exactly have a good record with forwards either)

In terms of the draft and trades, I think we could do away with the STC in the middle of the year and extend the squad size to 20 instead. The draft stays at 15 for your initial squad (everyone is struggling for talent at that point) but once the season starts you can bring in up to 5 extra players for any reason, maybe limited to 1 a week, but there are no injury trades out. Just like a real team you have to carry them through the year.

Team position ratings is a good idea, be interesting to see who's drafted power forwards (not me) or gun mids (possibly me)

I like the finals format, no change required.
Let's keep the draft format with a random draw however the first round of picks is based on the previous year's ladder position with any newbies at the end. Subsequent rounds follow the order selected randomly by our incredibly witty, talented, handsome and above all impartial organiser and score keeper.
