TOPIC: 2017: Thinking

There's no perfect system. The reason why mids are prominent scorers is because there's so many of them. Before a lot of people's time, we used to have 1pt for a hitout and basically the first round of the draft was picking a ruckman. Yeah, you might get the odd coach pick a gun mid like GAJ, but basically if you had pick 16 you were getting the 12th-14th best ruckman. The difference between 1st and 14th could be 20-30pts per game. So we fixed that.

Amazingbly, we've seen DuFFLe top scores INCREASE as a result. Why? More astute drafting. Back in the golden years, you HAD TO get ruckman and that would compromise the talent you'd get in other positions. This year we saw ruckman, mids and forwards go in the first round of the draft.

I don't think there's anything wrong with the DuFFLe, except the forward scoring in the general scheme of things.

However, I'd be open to any good ideas in regards to situations where a player gets injured early. I'd hate to see a one-sided DFFL grand final because someone lost a mid in the first quarter.

Not just because I'm down the bottom (not there very often), but I would favour a draft based on the previous year's finish like the AFL. Newbies could go first before the rusted ons.

Not sure if I'm liking that idea based on this years results Davo.

It does have merit though, normally I would say draft order doesn't matter to much because of the way we go through once then reverse it so pick 1 doesn't get a pick again until what was it pick 32 this year.
However it does look like the ones with first picks did do well this year as it seems there was only a few reliable ruckmen, I must say I was somewhat surprised but it turns out it was a stroke of genius for moptop to take Gawn with pick 1.
On the other hand Polly's year was pretty much shot as soon as Nic Naitakneey crunched big Sandi so luck still plays a big part.

Some way of increasing the scoring potential of forwards and backs compared to mids and rucks would reduce the importance of having early picks.
Can you imagine what might happen if for example forwards got 6 points for a goal.
I'm thinking Kennedy, Franklin etc would get picked before Gawn, Goldy?

I think the draft being based on previous years finish is justified only when some of the squad is retained.
I'm in a 8 player private comp where you get to retain a top 15 player and 2 non top 15 players.
However I like this comp where all players are up for grabs each season.

3 or so points for a tackle would help increase the value/importance of a back

Scores are increasing because teams are playing more high possession styles, and tackling better. Not our drafting IMO.

Live-streaming the draft order drawing from the hat, I'd like to see that!

How dare you insinuate that there is corruption and shenanigans involved in the draft order drawing.
Un-be-lievable!
Mrs Hg's reputation for honesty and fairness is undoubted, and should not be tarnished by highly dubious scallywags such as blocker.

Was that enough to earn the No.1 pick?

A mighty good effort.

Put it this way, I reckon Old Man Blocker will be very envious of your draft priority for 2017.

BTW I love the suggestion of live-streaming the draft order drawing from the hat.
Best suggestion yet, maybe just prior to the draft or even the night before for a a bit of a build up.

I've looked at the top 20 ruckmen, top 40 backmen, top 60 midfielders and top 40 forwards and found that the median score for these positions are:
  • Ruck 17.0
  • Backs: 9.9
  • Mid: 28.1
  • Forwards: 6.9

Data found here.

So a good ruckman will make up about 12.5% of a good team's score.
A good backman makes up about 7.3% of a good team's score.
A good midfielder makes up about 20.8% of a good team's score.
A good forward makes up about 5.1% of a good team's score.

There are many extrapolations made here that we could argue over the validity, but these figure look about right to me. Why I present this to you is for you to consider whether our ruck, backs, forwards and midfielders are valued appropriately. So where there were suggesting to point changes - such as counting handballs as half a point for midfielders - whether that will address the balance of scoring that you feel needs adjusting.

Awake 2017: Thinking 7 years 8 months ago #25

Awake
Okay let's have an additional contest.
Around June 30 or bye time or when there is a week or two off or concurrently:
The top 4 coaches of the year at that time choose a team each from any of the players involved in the duffle at that time. They take turns selecting and we all watch live and make (helpful) comments.
Then 1 plays 4; 2 plays 3. Winners go head to head the next week after being allowed to make three substitutions. Winner of that contest is crowned (interim) coach of the year and the team is crowned Duffle All Australian.
We could also run a Richmond Coach of the year for the bottom four coaches at that time?

I really like Awake's idea for an additional little competition in the middle of the season when things may be a little slow although it'd require a fair bit of work from Merc. It gives DuFFLers something else to play for if they're doing a good job coaching but don't have the talent on the park as well as more validation for Merc's weekly coach of the year posts.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

Three options for points tweaking:
  1. Midfielders' handballs @ 0.5 instead of 1
  2. Forwards' goals @ 4 points instead of 3
  3. Backmen's tackles @ 2 points instead of 1
