You don't want Joe Pesci as an umpire...

Go to Melbourne Rog, and look for the best cafe's, the story is all there.

No point complaining end of season or any season really. We know what the AFL's retort will be: "Someone has to get the least free kicks." It follows on from the cruciFyfing we saw earlier this year.

I don't pick on this bloke any more than the others, as they all tend to be indistinguishable, but Dean Margetts was on Adelaide Radio a few weeks ago, where he was introduced as "one of the best in the business" .

The audio clip is probably still on 5aa Sport archive, but not spellbinding listening, however, when asked towards the end of the interview about which game he thought he had an absolute shocker, he had no hesistation in choosing a Derby from a few years ago (Cousins name was mentioned to narrow down the era) where he admitted that he made about a dozen really major mistakes.

Chewy, the only Western Derby Margetts umpired and Cousins played was WD XXVI, rd 18, 2007.

We lost the free kick count 14-20 but happily, we won the game: 19.10 (124) -14.13 (97).

Josh Carr gave away 5 free kicks and received none. He won the Glendinning Medal with 26 disposals and three goals. He also picked up 3 Brownlow votes (Solomon 2 and The Wiz 1).

Yep, and it was their home game. I was listening in on the radio and at 3/4 time put on my jumper and walked right in through Gate 8. I don't think I've ever whooped it up so much at Subi.

A quick update to last week’s free kick stats.

After round 20 we now sit at 280 for (17th place) and 336 against (4th). Our differential (-56) is by far the worst in the league (next worst GWS and GC (-33)).

Zone: Freo Free Kicks / Opposition Free Kicks: Round 20 (Season Total)

1: 4 (37) / 5 (55)
2: 6 (91) / 14 (113)
3: 3 (109) / 7 (112)
4: 1 (43) / 5 (56)

Free kicks inside respective forward 50 show a significant discrepancy (-18). This discrepancy is widening at an alarming rate:

Zone 1: Freo / Opposition
Rds 1-6: 11 / 7
Rds 7-20: 26 / 48.

Pav and Ballas still without a free kick inside 50 since round 14.

Average number of entries per free kick inside 50
Season: Freo 25.9 Opposition 15.3
Rds 1-6: Freo 29.4 Opposition 38.0
Rds 7-20: Freo 24.5 Opposition 12.0

Quarter by Quarter

Team: Qtr 1 / Qtr 2 / Qtr 3 / Qtr 4

Freo: 6 (77) / 4 (69) / 0 (74) / 4 (60)
Them: 14 (104) / 11 (83) / 5 (83) / 1 (66)

The umpires seem to be taking a heavy stance against us early in games.

Home v Away

Home: Freo 147 - Them 156
Away: Freo 133 - Them 180

No surprises here.

Margins

I chose 30 points as a reference point to check the ‘umpires square up the free kick count when a game is won or lost’ adage.

When we’re 30+ points up: 64 - 65
When we’re 30+ points down: 21 - 19
When the margin is less than 30 points either way: 195 - 252.

We do seem to get a better deal when the game is ‘over’.

Umpires

Stevic (2-2) Freo free kicks 61 - Opposition free kicks 88
Pannell (2-1) 35 - 65
Armstrong (1-1) 39 - 48

We’ve had Stevic for the past two games. Frees 28 - 53 against us in those two games.

Our worst offenders (in the umpires’ eyes)

Kreepy 10 for - 32 against
Fyfe 19 - 22
Dawson 9 - 22
Duffield 3 - 19
Sutcliffe 10 - 18
Ballas 7 - 17
Elvis 5 - 17
………………..
Sylvia 1 - 10

Maybe we're just an excessively clumsy bunch of filthy cheats.
That Paul Duffield character is just plain evil.

Fantastic work Fre-Doh!

Ever one for more stats, I'd like to know how many frees resulted in a goal within a specified time interval - 40 seconds would be about right I reckon.

Someone, email that post of Fre_Doh's over to the Worst. I'd love to see them bamboozle themselves with something like that.
