Mercury 2019: Round 17 - Team Selections 3 months 1 week ago #1

Mercury
Round 17 commences with the Colliwobbles coming over to Optus Stadium here in good old WA to take on the eGulls. With bouncedown at 6:10pm your team is to be submitted to this thread by 6:00pm WA time.

Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear. I couldn’t bear to manufacture a fluff-piece for Round 16’s results. In the words of Marvin, as written by the once immortal Douglas Adams, “Why should I want to make anything up? Life’s bad enough as it is without wanting to invent any more of it.” And, “Funny, just when you think life can’t possibly get any worse it suddenly does.”

At least we can live in the fantasy land of the DuFFLe, but even that is drawing to an end for 2019. There are just three more games for each of you in the HomeNaway before the better teams challenge for the Glenmorangie Premiership Trophy and the lesser fight it out for the Stones Green Ginger Wine Richmond Cup.

At the top of the DuFFLe ladder there are only two wins separating rung #1 from rung #6. But when considering the permutations from subsequent wins and losses, take a good look at the Points For - Blocker has a sizeable lead on everyone and no-one will make up the difference in three games. This means, of course, that on equal win/loss, WillsieAir will be ranked higher. That is not to say that Blocker has a top four spot locked away - far from it. Note how Slammo gave the premiership favourites a good hiding in Round 16. Blocker needs to keep winning.

Funnily enough, the same can be said for Slammen’s Men. For them to play finals, they too have to keep winning. Sitting on rung #9 with a points advantage over the Collusions, Slammo needs the teams above him to falter. So let’s have a look at the Round 17 match-ups.

Blocker v Nelson
Wow-wee! Both teams on 11:5 and whoever wins will have a finals-bound cushion. Whoever loses could slide out of the finals altogether. My tip: The Dreamers wake in fright.

Moppy v PK
A mathematic possibility for the Knight Riders, but realistically these teams are playing for higher positions in the Richmond Cup. The Chookers win.

Cookie v Alvin
So Alvin goes in as favourite because they have the runs on the board. That isn’t to say that Cookie can’t bowl the Buccaneers over; in fact they can and I think they will. This will take the Ingredients out of the fire, for now.

FD v FunBeanMan
The Rashers have had a most successful season, yet the Fungis have given some teams a big scare of late. FD to win, but they will have to rack up a big score.

Straddo v The Captain
The Souls sit one win behind the Jokers on the ladder. Win and your finals are secured. Lose and you could be out of the eight by the end of Round 19. My tip: The Jokers will be too good and Straddo will do some soul-searching.

MattyT v 391
The Collusions have been on a slide into oblivion, but they could halt this decent if they knock off El Hombres down at the Dome. Both 391 and MattyT have been running hot and cold all year, and more cold that hot lately. El Primero could win, but they will just fall short.

Oos v Hypen
Both the satin-dressed knights and Hypen’s Pounders are done and dusted for 2019. Oos will win this battle.

Biz v Polly
The Superstars have a very, very slim chance of making the finals whereas Polly’s Hooley Dooleys have none. The stars should have the firepower to overcome Polly’s crew, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Hooley Dooleys have one last hurrah at Biz’s expense.

Slammo v The Colonel
Win and Slammo is in the eight after Round 17. Lose and Slammen’s Men still could play finals. For the Commandos, a win can give them a game’s breathing space; then after Round 17, they could afford to lose a match and still challenge for the premiership. I’m picking the Commandos.

Another quip from the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy

Zaphod: There’s a whole new life stretching out in front of you.
Marvin: Oh, not another one.

Well well well, round 17 and for the first the Souls have had to leave a player out of the side. Who knew that you actually had to do some selecting as a coach! The boys have struggled to perform consistently this year and we really need at least one more win to ensure a finals berth. Here's hoping they turn up a better performance than the Dockers. Good Luck Capt!

Ruck: Martin
Back: Riewoldt, Hartlett
Mid: Treloar, Polec, Dunkley
Forward: Membrey, Ablett
Int: Smith, Lipinski,, Lewis, dahlhaus

Note - Riewoldt was named but was also listed as a test on the injury list, in the event he is a late withdrawal, please place M. Wood into the backline in his place. Thanks!

Up against Polly who has a surprisingly good record against our side. The crazy cat lady is a big danger and gets her talisman Paddy Cripps back so we're on high alert as we try to maintain touch with the top 8.

If you get a chance to fix it, big Mummy is still out for you Pol.
