Great game by Clark and I thought Darcy looked fitter which is a relief. Jackson is a freak!
Thought we were out coached, we really need a better plan when opposition clog the area around the ball. It was only when players tired and the game opened up that it looked good in the last. I still think we need to play on quicker and not give the opposition time to get back.

I thought we were in control all game, despite struggling in the contest. Ross's tactics worked very well, but our response was better. If we changed our style to try to get more to the contest to win more ball, it would have played into Ross's hands as Saints are very good on the rebound. We saw that a few times when our team D broke down and they scored quickly. I think we did the right thing sticking to our plan, relying on team D by keeping from committing too many to the contest and just grinding it out. Turned out they couldn't keep it up for 4 quarters and we broke clear in the end.

Couldn't believe commentators saying it was just like last time. Yes, Ross's tactics were similar, but our response (stay at it and grind out the game) was very different.

Agree, KM, JL trusted that St Kilda wouldn't last the game out if the contest stayed tight. Albiet against different tactical game plans, that is how Freo have won most tight games this year.

Earlier in the year Saints had the game won in the third quarter and could coast home with no pressure on their style of play. This happened because Freo went away from the game plan in an effort to break the scrag, tag and scrap of Saints style. Last night Serong and co stayed at the coalface and forced the Saints to run the game out if they could. They couldn't. Look at Serongs chase to pressure in the last 90 seconds down the wing. He dragged every last ounce out to put pressure on Sinclair, and affected the kick. Treacy as well at the goalfront. Then Serong set up that crucial last bounce. It was all his work right through to the Amiss mark.

I think yhe extraordinary game fro Clark played a big part in this, he made up for the lack of clearances, and the courage above and beyond shown by Treacy, no Saints player felt they could relax at any time. And don't forget that washed up has been. Darcy.

Watching the game I was sure Duds would have been subbed at 3/4 time as I expected Fyfe to enter the game. Why Duds? At the time I didn't think he had found his AFL-standard again but reflecting on this today, I realise I was wrong. It was not the game style - close, hard-checking, melee - that suits Isaiah's skill set. I'm hoping he retains his spot for the Sydney game.

It is interesting watching taggers sometimes turn and face the player they are tagging with two arms in their chest to hold them out of the contest. This not only keeps the opponent out of the contest, it means that if the ball drops in the centre of the pack (as it so often does) the tagger is closer to the ball, and can dive in and get a quick handpass away.

We need to figure out how to combat this tactic. Maybe we did in the 4th quarter, because we did well in clearances in that quarter, after being thrashed in the first 3.

TV commentators said that we stayed out of the centre of the congestion at ball-ups in that last quarter. I assume to let Darcy/Dogga attack any ball drop but hoping for a wider hit out that would suit us better. I'd need to watch that last quarter again to see what happened.

Anyone got a more informed view?

RR, I think St Kilda ran out of petrol in the last because we fought them at their own game and kept it hard and tight all game. Last time we tried to spread the game and let them get away from us as a result.

That was certainly the case Merc at the last centre bounce after St K cicked that goal with about 50 sec to go. Perfect Darcy tap to Serong who was on his own.

CA, Serong did a lot of organizing for that bounce, and it seemed obvious who the tap target was, but St Kilda still gave him space.
He helped himself by forcing Brayshaw to go at least 20 meters back of the circle for the bounce. This created space for him to exit back around Darcy, and give the ball to the best possible option, Bolton spreading to space. Both their opponents called it for a bluff and were waiting to pounce on Serong coming out forward of the circle.

Q1, Why did Freo not use this earlier? or did they try?

Q2 Where Saints gassed, not concentrating fully or reacting quick enough? leaving space for the tactic to work so well. Serong had everything covered, space to run into, Darcy protecting Serong's space so no-one could get a hand on Serong, and Bolton's space had him running away from his opponent not into his tackle.

Great to see Darcy back in some form, we’re a much better side when he’s having an impact around the ground, taking marks, dishing off hand passes and he’s a good kick for a big bloke.

I saw Marshall try and come to the bench in the last, but he was waved off and had to go back in for the next centre contest. He is some sort of footballer though as it basically took everything we had to turn that considerable tide. That last centre bounce was the one we didn't get right last year against Essendon.

To be fair, that last bounce was pretty favourable for Darcy. Didn't have to move much to tap it to Serong.

Having said that, Saints left that space free for that bounce which they hadn't done all game. I guess they had all pulled back to the defensive side of the square.

Watching from level 5, I never really gave St K a chance of winning, and I thought some of their shady, sub-par, borderline tactics closer to NFL or wrestling than footy, but who expects anything different from a Ross Lyon coached team playing an away game? Very negative tactics and unlovely to watch. TV doesn’t pick up even a half of what’s going on across the pitch.

Freo did really well to keep them contained for the first three quarters and then step up a gear to blow them away in the final term. What a team they’re becoming!

Apart from Young and Pearce, we were full strength coming off a 9 day break. The Saints are 15th on the ladder with a woeful %, they’re very young and grind out games. Lyon as he did with us years ago knows how to get the best out of the group he has.

Does anyone seriously think we’ll take the game on when we come up against some of the better sides? I haven’t seen it this year or any year since Longmuir commenced.

I’m very glad we won, for the fans, players and it takes some heat off Longmuir for a week.
