TOPIC: The next shiny object is the draft

As our backline is quite aged (and hence into the injury prone bracket now) we should go for one backman at least. I like the choice of Tauru or Travaglia or Trainor. I'm all for the suggestion of Ollie Hannaford in our picks somewhere. The kicking of Bo Allen is the worry for his selection. Teams like Sydney wouldn't counternance that.

If we're going for a defender I'd like to see us take Clancy Dennis from Claremont. Did well at State under 18s and WAFL Colts level, good intercept mark and rebound qualities. But we still have youthful tall defenders in Josh Draper and Hugh Davies as well as Oscar McDonald who at 28 is certainly not due to be pensioned off yet.

Joe Berry or even Jesse Datolli for a small forward is what I am hoping for.. Xavier Lindsay as a wing type (beautiful kick) might be an option.. That's where I see our list needs

I'm not sure what you'd like me to say there Gumnut, that's where the WA kids are at this year. Bo Allan is a stand out and the only real top 30 rated kid with the rest a chance later in the draft with obvious flaws. It's a strong draft and heavy on Vic talent this year so I can lie and tell you a tonne of WA kids will be taken in the draft but then I'd just be blowing smoke.

The club has gone well past only picking WA talent which is a horrible strategy that shoots us in the foot like it has the OOFTIT's in recent years. Our best early picks have been interstate kids like Brayshaw, Serong and Young while the best way for us to recruit WA talent has often been getting them cheaper via trading or free agency, using our single competitive advantage to attract WA kids back home. You can go and grab an inferior WA kid at the draft if you like but I'd prefer to pick the better player and back the club and culture to keep them in WA with us.

However, I do take exception with the idea I am somehow putting down WA kids or have something against them. I always give a more detailed summary of WA kids because I see them more often and in person. Previous years I focus on WA kids and that's no different this year. They just aren't a good crop in 2024. Next year however is likely to be a bumper crop of WA kids who have already been dominating the colts. The likes of Rodriguez, Curtin and Whan are shaping up to be very strong players along with those even a year below that. WA will be a strong contender at the U18 Championships next season unlike the past couple of years.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

I don't doubt that you give coverage of West Australian kids Biz but I do think that you do tend to focus too much on their negatives. All these kids have their weaknesses, they're kids after all. Cal Twomey has Bo Allen at 10 and also rates Hamish Davis and Kayle Gerreyn as chances to sneak into the Top 30 draftees. I think this year being such a strong pool may have seen a few West Australian prospects who may have been top 20 or 30 prospects in other years being shuffled down further in the pecking order this year because of the strength of the the talent but that should not be seen as an indication of the West Australians not having the the talent or ability to be drafted or a good crop. As in previous years some West Australians are pushing their cases late as the Draft approaches with some very good performances at the draft combine and in the WAFL finals campaigns. This is probably the case with guys like Gerreyn, Davis, Allan, Malakai Champion, Will Hayes, Hugh Boxshall and Aiden Riddle. No doubt some of these highly touted Victorians will turn out to be lemons further down the track but having said that I wouldn't mind having Alex Tauru in Purple if we can't manage to get Bo Allan.

You just put all the players you want in order and then chose from that. I never really understand when media says we are going to take Bo Allen or whoever because he's West Australian. I remember when the same thing was said for getting Devon Robertson (we dodged a bullet there). I mean Hayden Young and Caleb Serong are going OK.

I would love to know what the correlation between state of birth/residence and ability to play AFL football actually is? Other than being biased towards WA because you are born/reside in WA. I think we have a great track record, especially in the last 10 or so years, of keeping interstate talent on the list. Even the most recent 'exodus' (Rory Lobb, Blake Acres, Griffin Logue, Lloyd Meek, and Darcy Tucker) would suggest that keeping the players we want is not related to their state of birth. If you look at that list, more of them are bloody West Australians than (country) Victorians. Get the best kid, or the kid that best meets the needs, and who gives a tinkers where they are from. Also, I'd prefer to base how well I think they can play on how well they seem to be able to play and not add a bit of loading to that score based on the ability to grope sand.

Eggy
AFL Power Ranking (Thanks Biz)
14 Tobie Travaglia, sounds good
30 Alex Dodson, ruck so I guess we pass on him.
Interesting that they rate Bo Allan as 5.

ESPN
14 Joe Berry forward
15 Bo Allan for those playing along at home
30 Jonty Faull forward but was injured during the year

ABC Dean Bilton
14 Xavier Lindsay midfielder or half back flank
15 Bo Allan
30 Harrison Oliver defender

Anyway, argue away for the next six days and then we bemoan the losses or traded draft positions before justifying who we got and how we got the number 1 pick at 14.
