TOPIC: The next shiny object is the draft

FreoTiger The next shiny object is the draft 1 month 2 weeks ago #1

Ok, season done, trade week zzz done, what’s next?? Draft time.

Wondering what is out there. Doing my list analysis I think good quality HBF is our area lacking depth. Anyone know who in the 15-20 range fits that??

Not happy with Clark, Draper or Chapman?

Chad Warner 39
Lachie Neale 58
Sam Switkowski 73
Michael Frederick 61

Picks 14 30 and 67 left. It will be interesting to see the gold nuggets Wallsy can uncover not only with pick 14 (hopefully Bo is left but doubt it ) but in particular 30 and 67.

Corporal- Clark yes, Chapman not sure yet and often gets used to cover talls , Draper no only seen him used as key defender.

Clark and Chappy are my first choice bu thought our list is weakest in that area.

Won't we have Oscar McDonald to come back, we only saw a quick glimpse of him this season.

Draper can play as a tall or smaller. Similar to Parker or Ryan.

There's a lot of resources out there for draft rankings and mock drafts however I always enjoy the coverage Rookie Me Central provide and tend to refer to them. I can give a brief run down of some players we might be interested in and you can check their profiles in that link for more info.

Their current rankings give a reasonable estimate of what players might be available around our position in the draft (our first pick will probably be 17). However, there are plenty in the rankings I don't agree with. Murphy Reid and Bo Allan are far too high and I can see them slipping to the 20+ range while others like Sid Draper and Tobie Travaglia are much lower than where I'd rate them.

I'd still prefer a small forward/half forward with our first pick despite Bolton jumping on board. Some extra attacking power who can pull short stints on ball is still a need for us and Joe Berry is many people's favourite for our pick as the best performed small forward this season who happens to be 17th in those power rankings.

However, the kid who has impressed me the most and has bolted up the rankings in the past few months is Oli Hannaford (ranked 27th above) who I spoke about a week ago on another topic. His improvement this season has been astronomical and he reminds me so much of a Zac Butters. I would have no problem grabbing him with our first pick.

We could also probably use a winger or half back and Travaglia is probably my favourite in that mould. He plays similar to a Lachie Whitfield as a decent sized runner with a beautiful kick. Good overhead and not afraid to put his body on the line or tackle despite being a little slight of frame atm, he will likely be gone before our pick.

There's also a good number of key talls around where our pick lies but honestly, none of them have really jumped out at me as a stand out. Luke Trainor was touted as a top 5 pick earlier in the season but has slid a little in the past few months and might be available at 17 but we don't really need a key defender and his work up the ground hasn't been as prolific. On the plus side is that Trainor is a very good user of the footy and moves quite well, I could see him being groomed for that Luke Ryan distributor role. Alix Tauru has gone the opposite way, improving across the season with his impressive contested marking in defence to push into the top 20 and possible top 10 consideration.

Jack Whitlock, Harry Armstrong, Jobe Shanahan and Jonty Faull are all big key forwards and have had good years but honestly, none of them have really taken the season like I'd hope and established themselves with a monster performance. They've all been relatively consistent and good tall forwards. All will go somewhere in that 10-25 range and we could opt for one to develop under Treacy, Amiss and Voss.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

Biz a couple of questions.
1. If Bo Allan is available at 14 (17?) would you pick him, should we pick him?
2. Who/what sort of player would you pick at 30 (as current)? That's still a good pick in this draft.

I think we have the players to cover our needs down back if you include Aish, Davies, MacDonald, Wagner and Worner with all the obvious players in our backline. Our midfield is also OK but I would lean towards getting a midfielder at pick 14 if it is used in this draft. So, 30 could be either a ruckman/fwd or a good HF?
What are your thoughts/preferences? Any names?

Our pick 30 might remain around there depending on how the bids go, Brisbane and Essendon's picks ahead of it will probably disappear meaning we'll be around that mark.

In regard to Bo Allan, he may be around at our pick 17 but I don't know if I'd take him. He does have some great athletic attributes, size, speed, power. But his kicking is very hit and miss, especially under pressure and that's a key attribute for me. I rate players with good disposal a bit higher. Doesn't mean he couldn't fix it and I saw him nail some kicks but often he's very up and under when he kicks and doesn't spear them. When he does, they spray off away from his target. I think the OOFTIT's will target him as they're gun shy of picking Victorians and their homesickness if he lasts to their pick.

Honestly, the draft is deep enough that any of those players I mentioned earlier could drift to our pick 30 and be a bargain. Oli Hannaford is floating in the late 20's and was outside 40 for most of the year in most people's rankings so he could easily last to that pick 30. It's difficult to predict at that stage of the draft but we're in a nice spot there to nab another very good player. Christian Moraes was listed as a top 5 player coming into this season and has slipped back to 28th in those rankings not because he had a bad year but because others were just exceptional. He'd still be a fantastic get as a someone who could play as a mid/forward or a wing, has silky skills, good movement and finds the ball really well. That pick 30 could be a gun of a player.

I don't think there's too many pure midfielders likely to be available at our pick 17, that's probably where if we held onto pick 10/11, we may have had a shot at one slipping. Most of the gun pure midfielders will go in the top dozen picks and we will be left with the next tier down midfielders like a Moraes or players who play multiple roles like Travaglia, Allan or Hannaford. Players that play a half back/forward/wing etc with stints in the middle.

David wall’s specifically addressed bo Allan being recruited.

He said to this effect , that while he would love bo Allan on our list , he believed we already had plenty of players in that mould.

Make of it what you will , but definitely listen to the David walls interview after the trade period finished.

Based on what he said , I don’t believe he is being targeted with our first pick.

In that same interview, he said that on draft night they may trade to next year , or drop down the list depending on the type of players available at our pick.

Developing some key position backs would be prudent, given they take time to develop, and they will be needed to step up when Ryan, Pearce and Cox are all over 30. Note Cox is the youngest at 27 next year. All of our other lines are represented by relative youth.

Mont, we have Ollie Murphy (200cm, Vic metro MVP, U18 AA), plus Davies and Draper, who both did enough to deserve further opportunities. Odin Jones is a big boy too, although historically a Ruck/Fwd.
Any key defenders we draft will be a year or two of development behind all of them.

I really don't know what you've got against WA kids when it comes to the Draft or even Rookie list, Biz. Even some well respected Eastern states talent scouts are recognising the talent here in the west but you just put them down at every opportunity and say they are only good for rookie spots and then the eastern states clubs swoop in and draft them ahead of us. Then we covet them to the point where we have to pay overs to bring them home.
