Anyone on here has experience being an ump,dont worry we won't crucify you.But if you have been in the situation having to vote in a game.How did you comprehend what the hell just happened,or did you have a recce at half time with the other umps to sort our a few contenders ,or was it all done after the game ,and how did you feel about your responsibility .

When you look at the incredible amount of work umps do, and the concentration required, I don't think they have the luxury of admiring how well someone plays.
The only time the umps might be needed to vote on best players is, say, a Norths vs Gold Coast game at Docklands - when the umps may be the only people watching the game.

It is what it is.

I have to admit I hate voting when required for my children's junior football team as I have to watch the whole game not just focus on my child.

But for the Brownlow
i) I expect that if you play in the centre then the umpires will notice you more,
ii) if you flap you wings and argue you might not get as many votes.
iii) I also expect that after someone is suspended that they might not get any votes I hope it's not the case but!!

What I do like is that it is not the plethora of "media experts' voting because half the time they don't even know the rules and the other half of the time they couldn't tell you more than 1 player from the non Victorian teams.

I like the status quo and it is one of the traditions of the game that I am happy to see continue unlike the Grand Final cemented into the MCG

The thing is Eggy, with Cripps, he flaps his arms and argues with the umpires more than most players yet he still gets lots of votes so maybe that works in his favour as well. I always thought that was why our own Nat Fyfe has always done so well in getting Brownlow votes, because he always just gets on with the game and never complains yet lately he seems to be getting a caning with free kicks being paid against him whilst Cripps, who is frequently challenging the tackler and caught holding the ball is hardly ever penalised. Maybe umpires these days just fall into line and pay kicks and give votes to these players, a new breed of umpires for a new breed of Brownlow winners.
