Here's the thing. That side that lost to Melbourne and Hawthorn, they are not that young. They've got 12 players out there each week closer to the end than the start. They are older than us! This rebuild thing, it hasnt even started yet.
What is the young talent coming through? Reid, Ginbey (just ok), Hough (not bad), Long (seems ok). But then what? Who else? Campbell Chesser......
In the 50's and 60's Melbourne reigned supreme. Norm Smith was the central figure of power, all the decision making went through him. In the 70's and early 80's Graeme Richmond of the Richmond football club was the same and Carlton had John Elliot. Essendon of course had Kevin Sheedy. When the drug crisis engulfed Essendon, one of the key findings was a lack of organization design; clear reporting lines. Authority equaling Accountability for each role. All the fundaments of effectively run businesses not present. Essendon had spent the post Sheedy years looking for their next saviour, their next Sheedy. They thought Hird was the natural successor and gave him the keys to the palace. No risk management, oversight, cross checking, governance. Just lots of good performance enhancing drugs.
All the forementioned clubs have been (or are) in the doldrums for decades after the power vacuum left by those ego maniacs. The clubs had no organisational structure to fall back on, didnt need to as their cult leader would just take care of things.
Nesbitt is to West Coast as John Elliot is to Carlton. Vosso was overruled on the Kelly fiasco and he finds himself at Essendon now - left like a thief in the night. The recruitment over the past four years (since his departure) would make Gerard McNeil blush! You are watching the footballing equivalent of the fall of Rome.
Back onto the next coach. How do you get a young coach in to deal with the next three years of bottoming out? They cant survive that.
I reckon Woosha will come back, serious. You know. Be the saviour and all.
