TOPIC: Baker

I must admit I was totally against this initially however I decided to just watch some Richmond games to see what he may have to offer. A big positive is that he plays quite angry which I think he may have been showing off to us on Sunday. Our guys didn't seem to fazed by anything that he did. The other main thing I noticed was that his ball usage is quite good especially when initiating attacking moves through centre of the ground and disposing of the ball into forward 50. This is an area where we still struggle as we frequently bomb the ball in rather than lower the eyes and pick out a leading target.
It's this aspect of Baker's game that interests me and if we could get him for a late 1st round pick and a later 3rd round pick maybe that would be a worthwhile trade, absolutely nothing more, and a medium level salary, nothing rivalling what our young guns Serong, Young, Brayshaw, Darcy, Jackson and co are getting paid.
If Richmond or Baker wanted any more I'd walk away, it's got to be on our terms and he would have work for his spot not given a commitment that he would be playing in our first 22 each week

A first round pick (+) for a middle of the road eagles fan with a bad 'tache.
What am I missing ?

How old? What's his contract status? Who did he grow up supporting? Whose spot would he take? What would you give up for him?
I'm also thinking Angus Sheldrick

Will only move to contenders… well we know who that rules out! Hahaha!

Being from SA he didn't grow up a Meth Coast supporter with ambitions of setting fire to his girlfriends house and all that.
Adelaide aren't contenders and Port can't afford him.
Good ball user. Cost around the same as Baker but with more upside.
Decent sideburns. Sensible haircut.

Apologies for Necroing this thread, but apparently we are still into him in a big way, Serong and Brayshaw apparently met with him when Richmond came to town a couple of weeks ago according to Cal Twomey on this week's Gettable. I have redoubled my assessment of his abilities and value to Fremantle in the past couple of months, and I still don't get it. But someone inside Freo must be pushing this barrow, because it isn't going away until he signs somewhere.

The only thing I can offer up is he is a valuable running asset when we go to put speed on the ball, and he is versatile; can play everything to lockdown like Walker to rebounding like Wagner to opposite wing to Sharpie to half forward like Freddie/Emmett, however a marking target he is not. He is most probably like-for-like with Switta, or potentially Aish, but I feels that is a bit insulting to Switta when forward, and Aish when back. Feels like his best footy was 2 years ago as well.

I like to rate my judgement of footy cattle, but this Baker scenario is really doing my head in. Anyone got anything else? I have read elsewhere a random comment on Switta potentially looking east, but with nothing backing it, and for me the only thing I remotely have on Switta is he is the only one not smiling in the big selfie photo after the win in Sydney. Hardly compelling!

Similarly, I don't get it and have him rated about the same as you. I'd probably add that he's not actually fast and is only average speed wise. His disposal is ok but nothing damaging or creative, just a hard at it, average footballer. I don't understand the appeal and I believe it's stupid to pay any sort of large sum for someone who is only going to replace Banfield or Switta with it up for debate whether that would be an improvement. Can you imagine using a first round draft pick to 'upgrade' Banfield to Baker?! It makes no sense.

The only sense I can make of it is we're trying to blow up his price for the OOFTITs and force another Tim Kelly situation. Get them to far overpay for Baker to come home when they should absolutely not be recruiting middle aged players. He is a die-hard eagle and doesn't even want to be at Freo, this is the only explanation.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

I don't get the Baker interest either. He is a slow and bog-average half-forward who also comes across as a bit of a dick. The only thing we are missing is a bit of an x-factor player who can generate forward momentum and score. Like Fyfe at his peak or like a Cripps or Bontompelli type now. So Warner is the obvious one although he might not be available until end of 2025. Bolton maybe, although don't give away too much for him.
I would hate to see our good hand of picks wasted on Baker.

Below are his past four Tigers B&F finishes:

2020: 6th
2021: 2nd
2022: 4th
2023: 6th

So Richmond’s coaches obviously rate him.

He’s 26, in his prime, and I reckon any club would find a place for him. I don’t think he fills a glaring need, but good midfields have a lot of depth. A lot depends on how much we rate the younger kids, and how long we see Fyfe, Walters and O’Meara going on.

I’d have him, it’s just a question of price.

Being internally rated for your role does not make you a star player that is worth a first round draft pick. Dawson was always highly rated by the coaches handing out votes for club best and fairest's but would not have registered as having any trade capital.

You can generally find role players anywhere and they shouldn't cost much of anything. He's played a midfield role in most of the past few years at the Tigers with stints at half forward to average 19 touches throughout that period. None of his stats are impressive and if you watch him in games, he doesn't do anything outstanding or have any particular outstanding traits. At best you could say aggression but he's too small to have any physical presence at stoppages.

I just fail to see value in trading for someone that is maybe and I stress maybe, a slight improvement on existing players. Especially when you consider the price of his contract taking up salary cap space for actual star players or the Tigers wanting a first round draft pick which is laughable in itself.

He’s not going to have made a difference to close games we lost this year, so why would we even think of considering him with the list we already have.

We’ve players like ODriscoll, Brodie, Erasmus, Simpson who have plenty of upside.

Morgan, if we compare Baker to say Johnson, watch Bakers next 5 games this year and see how many times he gets effectively tackled. Also check out his effective disposal stats, he is, I agree, worth chasing at the right price. Just the same as Warner is. And Bolton. I just think we will not get Warner for a fair price so don't sell the farm on him, that's what the eagles did with Kelly.

I see Baker as being a D##khead, perfect for the Eagles, just doesn't have the class to be a Docker.
