TOPIC: The Torpedo.

Just a bit on marking torps, it's a bit of a lost art, so players aren't really reading them anymore in a contested situation. But an elite reader of the flight can make a defender look a bit silly, and they can be really hard to spoil/defend against if the ball swings/drops late.

Also while I'm here, I have from time to time gone to the telstra tracker on the AFL app during games, and it is unbelievable how contested areas are, play is far more flooded than it ever was, it is just the elite ability of players to spread which makes play seem more open. Clearing an area with a long kick isn't that silly an option with the right players, problem is usually it is a dump kick and doesn't go far.

Something I did notice from the weekend was the longer handball forward of the play, like into a 30 degree attacking wedge, which was/is very effective at quickly opening up play, and traditionally too risky for most players and coaches, whom typically 100% move laterally before setting up overlap run.

On the weekend a player got tackled he released the ball straight down toward his foot. The ball hit the turf and his foot made contact. The ump blow and gave the holding the ball theatrics.
He did a drop kick...is the drop kick illegal?

Mac, I thought the same thing when watching the game but I guess because he was getting tackled and the ball was dropped and hit the ground first before the foot, the umpire deemed it dropping the ball. No idea if that is the correct ruling though.
I’m sure if Hayden Young was streaming out of the centre square and hit Josh Treacy lace out with a drop kick, that would be awarded a mark & Treacy would go back and slot it.

Against Brayshaw. I think the ump said 'the ball hit the ground - it's dead'.

I think one could argue about the free kick decision but the comment from the umpire just shows that he has no idea what he is talking about Similarly when a player grabs the ball tucks it under his arm and runs directly at a player and is then bought down in a tackle it is holding the ball regardless of whether the ball is pinned to his body. It's holding the ball because he has had ample opportunity before the tackle is laid. One of the worst ever examples of this was when Buku Khamis was bought down in a tackle by one of our smaller layers and umpires decided to ball it up. Disgraceful umpiring by umpires who clearly do not know the basic rules of the game

The torp is an essential tool of the modern footballer...but most dont have the skill through lack of trying it.
After the siren - 55-60m out - drop punt aint going to cut it..Do a Blighty!
Wet Weather footy - Get it on the boot spinning right and it will slide off the wet grass and make 70-90 metres easily.
Chaos Ball - close game late - let rip with a torpy - on the run is even better especially from a clearance to get over the back of a contested situation..
Into the wind - drop punt is useless - torp cuts through the breeze better especially a howler

Blocker, I think Serong's use of the long forward handball has been the catalyst for more players to use it. Serong is probably the best current exponent in the AFL of the attacking handpass, AND, the tackle.

Agreed, Serong is leading the way here. So much better than those Bulldogs and Melbourne throws masquerading as hand passes.
