Lyon ran a two-speed system. You were someone he trusted who could do whatever they liked on the field: like Fyfe, Mundy, Walters, Johnson and Hill, or you were a foot soldier who had a role to play and no more, like Dawson, Spurr, Mayne etc.
Hill had licence to play his game. He was the best winger in the league. The stats show how attacking he was.
I’m more than happy to hear arguments that in the aggregate Lyon was too defensive. I think that is true. But he never put the brakes on Hill or his brother. They were among the few that got to freelance.
