Yep, Polly, Hill was a gun despite Lyon's "coaching" not because of it.

Oh what could have been.

He was still a kid before RL Morgan, he was always going to improve. That doesn't mean he reached anywhere near his potential and it was clear as day to see the hesitation from him and all players when moving the ball forward. I know you like to be contrarian with your opinions but it was a very clear impact on the way a lot of players played the game including Hill. He could still be that attacking player but he never had the same license to always attack and show off his skills, movement and vision.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

Lyon ran a two-speed system. You were someone he trusted who could do whatever they liked on the field: like Fyfe, Mundy, Walters, Johnson and Hill, or you were a foot soldier who had a role to play and no more, like Dawson, Spurr, Mayne etc.

Hill had licence to play his game. He was the best winger in the league. The stats show how attacking he was.

I’m more than happy to hear arguments that in the aggregate Lyon was too defensive. I think that is true. But he never put the brakes on Hill or his brother. They were among the few that got to freelance.

And also, for how many decades do I need to be consistent in my views before people take on face value that I might actually believe them, rather than assume that I am making them to be contrary?

I find being called contrarian because I occasionally don’t hold the same view as some people to be pretty reductive and a bit insulting if I’m being honest.

Nothing Personal here, I just thought ?RLyon ruined a amazing potential football team, (and probably a admin team FWIW),and under his watch and we did not get set up for success and succeed. Right now, We do have a really incredible talented list, Reading what our Doig medal winner said about what goes on between the ears was a real insight for me. Maybe this is an opportunity.

Morgan, I for one have never thought you don't believe what you are saying. That is what makes arguing the point with you a true argument. You don't bend with the wind.

We can never all agree all the time, even on the eagles (Hypen?) or Shane might as well close the board down and go fishing in that flash boat he bought and told no-one about.

For all his faults, Roly remains the only coach who has gotten us to a Grand Final, and the only one who won us a minor premiership. He also has the best Win percentage of any of our coaches. So maybe give him a little bit of credit.

Alternatively, here's a list. Where does he sit on this list for you?
Neesham
Drum
Allan
Connolly
Harvey
Lyon
JLo

He's in my top 3.

Look, I agree that being called a contrarian is an unfair label to throw on someone just because their views are sometimes different from a select group of people, and it's insulting to suggest that genuinely formed opinions aren't just being expressed as an exercise in contrarianism.

Having said that, I also believe that suggesting that someone has made the comment that a poster often acts in a contrarian manner, is simply doing so because the poster's views aren't the same as theirs is pretty reductive and a bit insulting.

In my experience, people make the claim of contrarianism through the observation of a long running pattern of behaviour and inconsistencies in view points. This is just a general observation and in no way specific to any individual.

Don’t do it Footloose. Once you enter the Lyon Culture Wars you might not come out the same person,

For mine Connolly was the best coach we had followed by Neesham.

Connolly came when we were a basket case on and off the field he worked hand in hand with Schwab and Hart to rebuild a club on its knees. He got us to our first final and into a prelim. If things had dropped our way in 2006 we might have had a flag instead of those other flogs. He was a coach an innovator and a marketer and a true team man.

Neesham was our first. He was brave and innovative and got the most out of a pretty poor quality squad. He nearly got us to finals with a team that shouldn’t have been near it.

It wasn't intended as an insult Morgan, in fact I was under the impression you enjoyed being the counter to many arguments on the site. Many times you have used the line "it's never as good and never as bad as it seems" and try to provide more context in the opposite direction of an argument to balance things. Apologies if it offended you.

Using stats to say Hill was better under RL than his first 3yrs at Freo doesn't really illustrate anything other than natural improvement. My point was that he and many other players could have improved and gone to a different level under a different environment. Sometimes the environment is not conducive to learning and development and I'd argue that was the case under RL.

Very few young players come through under RL, there's a reason he tends to take on established sides and doesn't rebuild them.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.

Yes established but not necessarily a good side. They finished 1 game outside 8 last year and were listed as 10th and 11th in age and experience at beginning of year. Although McPharlan liked RL he always said he couldn’t see him doing a total rebuild with lots of younger players. Some yes. He does now of course have Robert Harvey & Co to back him.
