For all of you defending Maynard, ask yourself this question, how can that be okay?

No one's defending Maynard or saying what happened is ok.
The issue is if it was an unavoidable accident or not.

20 years ago what Maynard did was acceptable, today it is not. I love watching all the old clips where this stuff was OK but now we know better and the effect that these bumps are having on playes lives. There are times where these collissions could be avoided and this one of them.
And I'm not comparing Maynard's hit with Caleb's supposed dangerous tackle. What I'm saying is that if that was considered dangerous and worthy of a weeks suspension and disqualification from this year's Brownlow then an action such as Maynard's where his intent to make body contact was fairly obvious to anyone willing to see it, deserves weeks and disqualification from this years Grand Final. The comparison with Gaff's hit on Andy is that Dangerfield and the Channel 7 idiots logic is that Maynard did not intend to hurt Angus and the same argument was used in Gaff's defence, that he didnt intend to break Andy's jaw, just hit him in the chest. The fact that he missed and broke his jaw coorectly resulted in his 7 week suspension just as Maynard's concussing of Angus. He may not have wanted to see Angus knocked out but there was a fairly good chance that it might happen.

Are you saying freo00 that players have to alter the way they play against a player with a head guard? The head guard is irrelevant.

For all of you wanting Maynard rubbed out, ask yourself this question, if a Freo player did the same thing would you be comfortable with him being suspended?

Yes DS, i'd be cursing him or her for being so reckless., but in the continued interest of player 's wellbeing I'd expect the penalty completely.

early on this season, Treacy was playing an old--school physical style with some recklessness, and I was thinking he needed to be careful and adapt to the modern game.

if he'd knocked Angus Brayshaw out like that I'd cop it without whinging about anti-Freo conspiracies

DS. I am not saying Brayshaw should be treated any diferent .
I was just pointing out that this failure of care for another player could end up finishing someone's career , and in Brayshaw's case that could happen .
I think it could have been avoided with something called duty of care !

Robbie Grey - tackled heavily, even recklessly by Nyhuis across the boundary in Port's forward right pocket. Looks awful, stretcher called, medical golf cart called - quite possible that Robbie has a broken neck, might even END UP AS A PARAPLEGIC! But, comes good during the early part of the week, a bit sore - trains lightly and picked to play for Port the following weekend.

Ryan Nyhuis - suspended for multiple weeks, cut from the list at the end of season. Career over.

Fact.

I can’t recall another smother attempt resulting in a game ending concussion. It was careless, rough conduct and the consequence for Maynard needs to reflect that.

Thanks for that confirmation Polly. Just on looking for a similar smothering attempt, remember the Carlton game a couple of years back where we beaten by a kick after the siren, a soft free kick given where I think it was Andy Brayshaw attempted a smother and made incidental contact because he pulled his bump and was penalised leading to our loss. The Carlton player just tumbled over as a result of the front on contact but was not injured because our player pulled his bump and only made minimal contact unlike Maynard who chose to go through Angus Brayshaw at full tilt.

So are we taking the smoother out of the game now? To protect players heads and legs as well? I'm glad I'm not playing the modern game, not sure what I would have done. No one is talking about Brayshaw taking evasive action to avoid contact? So it goes to show how quickly it happened in real time. People jump in the game all the time. People jump off the ground and make spoiling attempts that crash packs leveling them and bodies go in all directions.
Not defending anyone here, but the incident looked first and foremost to be an attempt to intercept the ball, and the player got off the ground a long way at speed. Watching it in real time speed, there is not a lot of time to be making decisions about oh I missed the ball, how about I bump the player kicking and flatten him. I imagine what happened next was more of an unfortunate instinctive reaction. The vision from behind the goals in real time puts it into perspective for me. This could have happened to anyone. It is a contact sport, players do get hurt unintentionally all the time. Some of the leg injuries are career ending.
