Always watch finals marvelling at the intensity and skill of the teams and think, "we are way off". Tonight, lots of pressure and little else. Nothing really out of the ordinary on show tonight, is there?

Wouldn't think our best is far off that.

Lacking one strong player to take on the likes of the Maynard type players.

Only a matter of time before Maynard really hurt someone. He's been getting away with this rubbish all season and it's fine to say it's just the way he plays the game but if as in tonight's game it comes to pass then he has to accept the consequences which in this case should be 3 to 4 weeks minimum. It will be interesting if the MRP really care abiut head high contact and by comparison, how many weeks JVR gets for his hit on McStay. I can't believe how Dangerfield went in to defend Maynard along with the rest of the Channel 7 idiots.

I have to somewhat disagree Gumnut. Based on the vision I saw (and I may have missed some) Maynard jumped to block the ball and turned into Brayshaw to absorb the collision and Brayshaw then fell onto the ground. It wasn’t clear if his head hit the ground or was a contributing factor. I guess it all depends on how the collision is interpreted. I’m not sure what else Maynard could do after a legitimate attempt to spoil. He had to prepare for the collision or he would have been wide open. Either way, it wasn’t just an attempt to bump Brayshaw and Maynard was playing the ball. If he gets weeks for that then expect players to be banned for other incidents that occur such as in marking contests.
If that was Luke Ryan rather than Maynard we’d be livid if he got suspended.
As for Maynard, haircut aside, I’d love to have him in purple.

Except, WTB, on more than 1 occasion Freo players in similar circumstances have been told they have a responsibility not to take actions that will result in contact to the head and have been suspended. Ask N Fyfe, he may help clarify.

Ah, I forgot to factor in the inevitable AFL Freo conspiracy theory that references an incident from 2014.

That aside, I’m not saying that Maynard will get off, I just think he should get off. Head high impact has been harshly dealt with in the past (including 2014) so nothing would surprise me. I guess if we have to compare it to Fyfe, his act was an attempt to bump, ie an intention to make strong contact with his opponent, while Maynard attempted a spoil and Brayshaw ran into him as much as the other way around. I thought Fyfe was stiff and Maynard would be even more stiff (cue inevitable stiff jokes)

Not a Freo conspiracy, WTB, just used a Freo example as I follow the team. many other clubs would have the same thoughts. There is a double standard in the MRP, and it relates to "Name" & "Drawcardability" to me.

I agree that irrelevant matters have tendency to impact on how the AFL judges these penalties. As an example, Maynard would have a better chance of getting off if next week was the GF because the AFL wants the best players out in the ground.
It won’t surprise you to know that I just don’t think that the AFL saves their angst solely for Freo.

Just cherry pick the bits you want to read and reply to, WTB. I did not say the AFL saves it's angst for Freo, I did say

"just used a Freo example as I follow the team. many other clubs would have the same thoughts"

I do reckon, however, that Freo do cop more than some other clubs when it comes to setting an example, hence my earlier comment. No player could be livid for being suspended for head high contact, accidental or deliberate, in this day and age. Maynard did not have to jump into Brayshaw, and did not have to protect himself with his elbow. Brayshaw had every right to expect not to cop an elbow to the head. And, Brayshaw continued on his line, he did not run into Maynard.

Maynard could have kept his arms up as per the spoiling motion but he chose to drop his arms and turn the point of his shoulder into AB's head. I felt like we could have beaten Melb tonight.

Maynard bumped. A smother attempt morphed into a bump. He's gone.

Everything Maynard does starts out as a legitimate action Walter but always ends in a concerted effort to inflict maximum pain on his opponent and yes, he's the guy you'd love to have on your team but in today's environment where we are supposed protecting the head of opponents there is a responsibility to the player being bumped. This applies equally to Fremantle players and some have been held to account for far less actions than Maynatds last night. Alleged dangerous tackles which didn't affect their opponent's ability to complete the game. Remember Caleb Serong and Jaeger O'Meara earlier this season. Consistency is a problem for the MRP, something they have failed in again this season and the fact that Brayshaw was concussed should see a fitting punishment by today's standards. 3 to 4 week minimum.
If you wish to play the game in the manner Maynard does you have to accept the consequences if something goes wrong.

Are people seriously saying that if you jump in the air to spoil a kick you should keep your arms up until you land? That's just silly.
