Unfortunately, I don’t know any company who isn’t interested in making a profit.
It’s called being able to pay bills and live a little.
The AFL itself has turned into a big profit making business.
None of us would survive if we all worked for nothing.

I think the argument here is the principle not the means.

Absolutely PG, but I suspect the club already has in mind 2 million good reasons a year to extend the sponsorship.

The problem for Freo is that being seen to support a fossil fuel company now has its own consequences for Freo. So even if, like you, the club has no moral issue aligning itself with Woodside, the question the Freo admin need to ask themselves is how much blow-back are they prepared to take?

I'd prefer Freo do get into the moral rights and wrongs of the sponsorship, but even if they don't do that they need to figure out what sort of premium they need to ask for to align themselves with a company that is increasingly on the nose? how much more does Woodside need to pay than a less odious sponsor (at least among some part of society). Social licence in Freo's case has become a bit of a zero sum game. I get what Woodside gets out of it, but even the number crunchers at Freo will need to decide how much good will is financially worth to them.

BHP merged their fossil fuel portfolio into Woodside's business. Now BHP can say in their annual reports how they are striving for a cleaner future......blah blah blah.

Bloody criminal. At least BHP had enough brains to stuff their dirty laundry under a blanket. The blanket being our sponsor who doesn't much worry about this namby pamby environmental stuff. They were only too happy to bring BHP oil and gas operations into the New Woodside, no clandestine name change required. Truth is they don't give a stuff. Never have never will.

Disgraceful. Freo could get another sponsor, maybe just not as much dollars. Make a loss then. They don't have to do this.

This is a great thread, about which opinions seem to be mostly polarised. Here's mine:
I recognise and understand that our climate is changing, and not for the better. However, I'm not into either catastrophism or climate change hysteria. Our planet is neither burnt nor burning, and there is no modern extreme climate event that has occurred for the first time. I deplore the massive error the current government is making by insisting that the only way forward for Australia in terms of power generation is 24/7 renewables, and censoring any discussion about a nuclear option including SMRs and micro reactors. It is a fact that Australia is the only top 20 world economy without nuclear power, the only true carbon-emission-free power generation.
Whether common sense or a change in government brings a consideration of the nuclear option, or we go full on with renewables, it is undeniable that we will need firming and backup power supplied by coal and gas for around the next 2 decades. Given that gas is cleaner and more efficient than coal, it's clear that gas, at least, is going to be required for at least the next 20 years.
Bearing all this in mind, I see no invidious problem with retaining Woodside as a sponsor.

What would get you to change your mind, Grandpa? Is there any evidence or event that would need to occur for you to concede we have a massive problem with climate?

My car runs on fossil fuels, I fly in planes powered by fossil fuels, I rely on transportation and delivery systems that are totally dependent on fossil fuels, I rely on food production and supply networks that are reliant on fossil fuels and all my cooking and household heating and cooling is dependent on fossil fuels. I must be the only one in this 'terrible' situation. Am I?
Interestingly electric cars, solar panels and wind turbines are largely dependent on fossil fuels in their manufacturing and electric cars for their electrical power re-charging.
Currently Australia is dependent on fossil fuels for more than 80% of its energy supply (base load power) for industrial, commercial and domestic needs. This will be the case for some time to come. Dropping Woodside as a Fremantle sponsor will not make one cracker of difference to Woodside nor to the climate. There is an expression 'cutting off your nose to spite your face'. It's called virtue signalling. Let's not do that.

People, can we hold off getting rid of Woodside as a sponsor until my roast dinner is cooked, and it’s chicken in case anyone needs to know.

Sounds like some folk would prefer a financially strong club that might help us win a footy competition rather than facing up to the morality of how we get the money. And people wonder how we managed to stuff the planet. Enjoy the short term benefits and ignore the consequences.

We’d never accept sponsorship from land mine manufacturers, which are less of a threat to the planet than some of the companies that we’re happy to do business with. Is it just easier for some to ignore the latter because the damage isn’t as obvious (at least not up to now)?

Hypen, I'm not arrogant enough to offer you a one-liner in reply, and your questions seem genuine. What part of my mind do you consider needs changing? I accept that there is a serious problem with climate change, as I said. I acknowledged the occurrence of extreme climate events, and perhaps they are occurring more frequently than before, but none of them is new.
My main point was that in my opinion, the only way to achieve 24/7/365 power generation with carbon-free emissions in future is to accept the nuclear option.
It's a pity that political leanings are able to stifle rational debate.

Woodside make their money from selling a product that is destroying the planet. Fremantle Football Club take some of that money in exchange for positive publicity.

If you're fine with that happening then just say you're fine with it. Don't deny that this is the equation. Don't try and justify it as something else. Just own it.

You don't have to care but be honest about it.
