The key position player we want in the main draft is Daniel Curtin from Claremont, 195cm, 93kg, he's been playing key forward kicking a bundle of goals but in recent weeks took a turn at CHB and then had a run in midfield collecting 26 disposals. Unfortunately I think other clubs may already have him marked for selection including the slime up the road

It's an interesting exercise to look at our list and see where we have a glaring deficiency or position that we need cover for at the moment. I don't think we should be chasing any mature age trade targets except maybe Jeremy Sharp from Gold Coast and concentrate on getting together a good group of draft picks to get the best kids that we want to develop for specific roles into the future. We need to work on signing our best 22 to 30 players for longish term deals and keep them all happy to be part of an extended charge at Premierships. The way Erasmus and Johnson are developing shows that they are just waiting to take over the roles of Fyfe and even, dare I say it, Will Brodie on a permanent future basis as is the forward band of Amiss, Treacy and Jackson rendering an injury prone and ageing Taberner obsolete. We also have handy young small forward options in reserve if anything drastic were to happen with Walters and Schultz

Spare a thought for Jack Buller, I know it's every young footballer's dream to land a spot on an AFL list but he''s looking at going from being a member of a well coached stable lineup at Claremont looking like a big chance at a Premiership in the WAFL to being tossed headlong into a disorganised rabble with dodgy fitness teams, suspect coaching and probable 2 to 3 year minimum chance of playing finals at the Weagles. He's going to be expected to carry responsibility in the ruck as Bailey Williams is useless and not AFL standard and, as Reuben Ginbey has found out, it will wear him down as there is no support coming from experienced players like Gaff and Darling. It would be nice to see him in Purple however there is a bit of a queue forming in the big man department with us.

Freo will likely be happy to leave an open list spot there if we remain relatively low on the injury front. It'll save on player payments and allow more development time for the kids while not wasting the time of a mid-season draftee. Jeremy Sharp will almost certainly be coming home at the end of the year and we need to use a couple of national draft picks so list spots are at a premium. I wouldn't throw a list spot away at anyone not pushing our best 22.

What happens with upgrading all of Schultz. Treacy and Banfield from the rookie list to the senior list? Do they count to our minimum requirement of 3 taken in the draft?
Just wondering if we can package up our picks to try to get back into the first round and only select 1-2 players in the draft.

My understanding is that you need to reduce your main list by at least 3 players from 38. Rookie elevations onto the main list would count as a draft pick in the sense it wouldn't increase the number of removals from the primary list but reduce the number of draft selections we would have.

So if we have 38 on our main list at year end, 3 spots would need to be opened up (by delisting or moving players to the rookie list). If we delisted the minimum 3 players, we would have 3 selections at the draft. The number of draft selections would be reduced if we upgrade a rookie to the main list so if we upgraded Schultz, we'd have 2 draft selections left.

It's a pity if we reach a stage where we don't want to delist any players and makes for some heartbreaking decisions. It's why we lost depth players like Crowden and probably was even a factor in Dave Mundy's retirement

Every year we bemoan losing players who we think shouldn't be cut. eg Brady Grey, Tobe Watson, Mitch Crowden but as you say they are really just depth players and we've got plenty who have replaced them.
It's highly unlikely that Colyer will get another senior game and there are others that are on the outer and with our good run of injuries probably will be struggling to get a recall and gone at years end.

I think Colyer is one who may be close to the cut this year and really worry about Tabs, he misses a lot of games through injury, turns 30 next year and despite being a damned good key forward when fit, Amiss, Treacy and co seem to have gone pat him this year and we still have others in Sturt, Corbett, Kuek who could play a similar role whilst Luke Jackson takes pride of place in the forward line as a tall forward. I hate to say it but the Weagles could do a lot worse than try to get a couple of years out of him if we did delist him. Most of our guys at Peel would walk straight into their first 22 if cast adrift by us
