Sheffield Shield is on Davo - about the same pace, spread out a bit.

If all soccer games were played like the Germany v Japan game just completed I might be a fan of the game but unfortunately they aren't. Great game, very competitive until the final seconds. Well played Japan

I thought I’d better catch up on what was happening in the Word’s Greatest Game’s Greatest Festival of Greatness by watching YouTube highlights packages from each game so far. You know, like those 20 minute-long AFL Mini things on Fox Footy.

They were all 2 minutes long. Says it all, really.

The scissor kick goal by the Brazilian striker was pretty good.

Yep. That 10 seconds was excellent. The other 99.9% of the game .... ?

I haven’t been a big fan of the world game but am coming around to it after watching for a few years and watching some the sewer pipe blockage stuff the AFL serve up quite often now between some great games.

Soccer can be quite a physical game if you’ve ever watched it from ground level at a game and some of the players would be KPP size in an AFL game. Since they’ve introduced penalties for rolling around the ground like a croc death roll after a slight touch, a particular speciality of the South American teams, the game has become better as we’re seeing at this World Cup, compared to previous ones.

The player skills in moving the ball around to engineer a scoring opportunity is something else.

Our best games would in my opinion beat them more often than not. Unfortunately the number of congested games we now have has been a blight on the Aussie footy game for many years.

Even my 90 year old Dad who couldn’t stand soccer for many years enjoys watching it now, because play is not congested between the goal areas or one end unless there’s a corner.

Imagine if ice hockey had two or three shots on goal across an entire game and no jumper-over/whack-a-mole fights, ever.
A). Who would bother watching;
B). Who would ever go to a game?
Add in no beer for anyone and you've got a Class A Fizzer of a world sport.

Some of your comments are well justified Noddy. Many of the WC players are exceptional athletes, as they should be given they represent the pinnacle of a world wide game, however, the game itself is based on defence and limiting shots. While the WC will produce some interesting moments it is not representative of the game that is on show for the intervening 3 years and 11 months. And even the WC has plenty of 0-0 or 0-1 snore-fests.
Finally, the “crackdown” on staging may have removed the worst examples but staging is still a regular and extremely irritating part of the game (check out Ronaldo’s goal)

I’ll watch some of the WC, as there isn’t much else on and the circus is seductive, but I’d rather they had goals that were a metre wider and scores that were double the current standard output.

Ditch the offside rule. That would increase scoring opportunities. Some of the os rulings are so marginal. Also keeps the defenders on their toes.

To make the game more interesting there shoud be two balls in play.

Nah - make it a triangular field (goal each corner) with 3 sides and 6 players per team (2 defenders,1 mid field, 2 attackers and a goalie).
Scoring as normal.
No offside.
