I’m with Shane on this, Margett’s knowledge of integrity in the umpiring area is proven. A promotion to the head of integrity in the AFL Department of Umpires is now a no brainer.

Surely given the details of games manipulated there should be no Brownlow awarded for 2022.
What else can go wrong for Gil? Failure on Racism. Failure on Gambling. The AFL is rife with gambling support. I hate it.

They want to keep him on, Hubble. To navigate the AFL through all the stuff that happened on his watch.

Unfortunately the way things are now, if you are a CEO of any large organisation be that sporting or otherwise, unless you operate like Putin or Xi with the watchers being watched you’ve got no chance of keeping across or completely preventing misconduct within your organisation.

Overall, Gil’s done ok, just watch the next bod to see how they go.

In this case, what the AFL has done is allow round-by-round betting on the Brownlow medal. If you just have betting on the final result, it would take a reasonably complex conspiracy to use insider trading to bet on the result. You'd need multiple umpires providing a lot of information for you to have any chance of being sure of the result.

You allow betting for each game and all you need is one umpire and maybe one other person to put the bet on. It's easily corrupted and it's not that hard to arrange because you're not actually altering anything. You're just insider trading.

This is something that was raised beforehand, it's not like this is a view that is obvious in hindsight.

The reason they were caught is probably because it was just a bunch of idiots who didn't know what a suspicious betting pattern looked like. There could be other umpires doing it who have a better system for not being detected.

The integrity of the medal count was damaged by the AFL allowing the bet. It's based entirely on hoping that the information didn't leak.

I've been watching Ch7 news (through a window outside JB HiFi) and strangely they just aren't reporting this.

I wasn’t aware the AFL decided on what could be bet on.

The AFL are on a cut of all gambling revenue. They can control what is bet on and they have information sharing arrangements to look for corruption.

It's called the "integrity agreement”.

They just needed to be a bit more clever. Could have easily covered their tracks by putting some bets on West Coast players.

That would only have made it more obvious they were part of an insider trading ring, no-one else would place bets on eagles players. (hang on, has the schnozz had his accounts scrutinised?)

Punting needs to be taught in Australian Primary Schools.

Only then will people understand the dangers (and opportunities) of spread betting.

* which of course is the future of professional sport.

Noddy - you should have a read of The Boys' Club by Michael Warner...

I don't know how, but the former boundary umpires from Subiaco Oval must have had a hand in this somehow.

Itscrap - they do reach kids about gambling in schools, but I don't think they go into too much detail.
