TOPIC: Kara Antonio retires

Kara's decision to retire seems to have been missed on Dockerland but it is deserving of recognition (apologies if I have missed it in amongst other threads).
Arguably she has been the best ever player in our women's team and is up there with the top half a dozen players across the whole competition since it began. It's been a very ordinary season for the AFLW team but hopefully they can pull out a win for her last game.

She exuded composure and imparted confidence to the players around her.
Smoothly handed over and supported the captaincy.
She gave a great parting speech, glad she found her purpose again, and happiness over here in the west with the Dockers.
A class act and great example to the players coming through.

Farewell to a playing "Juddy", but I'm sure she will remain at our Club for a while in other roles. An absolute champion.

Although I wouldn't agree she's been our best player over the years (Bowers clearly, with Miller probably already next best. Juddy's best years were before AFLW), she was by far the most important in getting our team established and operating as a force in the league. She was a huge presence in the formative years of the team and the league and deserves all the kudos that she's getting.

BTW Great win in her last game. I thought we were gorn then the team dug in to get it done for Juddy - and she made a solid contribution.

We were at the game and it was pretty bloody entertaining frankly. Apart from the howling gale.

I hope Kara (and Mundy) spend a bit of time on ABC Radio as they have been these last two years. Great insights compared to the long retired dinosaurs like Sad Malthouse, Ling and the WA weagles players they sometimes have.

* we spent the whole match laughing at how bad it would be to be tackled by Kiara Bowers.

Virtue signallers.

Stop trying to be so woke, the blokes kick longer and score more goals. Most probably bowl faster too. I doubt Rory Lobb would though. He'd be that 6ft 8inch guy who bowls offies.

Anyway, everyone knows the competition is a joke so stop being so politically correct all the time and start calling things as I see it.

Congratulations Kara (I can’t bring myself to use her nickname “Juddy” ) on an inspiring career - but I agree with kidmaple - I think Kiara Bowers is our best ever AFLW player in purple. I also agree with itscraptacular that having “there’s no I in Kara but there is in Kiara!” bearing down on you would be a truly scary experience despite the fact she’s only 164cm (that’s 5’4”) tall and weighs about as much as one of Sean Darcy’s thighs.

Obviously determined to ensure her fellow inaugural marquee teammate was going out with a win, “Turbo” - who has buried more people than a Karrakatta gravedigger, - clocked up a lazy 34 disposals (16 contested), eight clearances and 22 tackles - a new AFLW record. Her stats are even more astounding when you think that the women’s games are generally shorter than the men’s because of the lack of time-on.

Lanky 185cm Irishwoman Aine Tighe also starred with her best return of 4.2 - her very proud Dad just out from Ireland was sitting behind me. One snap from 50m bounced through for a goal - another booming set shot from around 50 cleared the pack but was off-line for a point. Aine spent the first 2 years with the club cruelled by injury - this is her first full year and she’s impressed with her agility below her knees, marking in the forward line and rucking as well.

The women’s team, which up to this season have been strong contenders (don’t get me started on 2020 when we were the only undefeated team and the season was cancelled during the finals with no premiership awarded) were decimated this year by players leaving for expansion teams plus a host of injuries to key players. The season wasn’t what we were used to, but by the intensity and teamwork shown on the weekend I think we’re back on track for next season. Hope Kara stays on in the position as a forward coach as she has been fulfilling this year while injured. You go, girl.

The enjoyment I received from Saturday's game against Hawthorn was only bettered by the Finals victory over the Bulldogs. The women's game is fierce and competitive with skills, toughness and desire that is different (not lesser) than the men's game. And it is improving rapidly!

Some observations: when Kara Antonio kicked her first goal the joy shown by her team mates was incredible. Every single one of them rushed to her (I think we incurred a warning for not being back in the 5x6x5 for the bounce down afterwards. The team were playing for her!! Kara may not have been our best footballer, but probably the smartest and football savvy and in the end only let down by her body. Should be the men's forward line coach. It is a toss up between Kiara Bowers and Hayley Miller as to who is our best player. They are different but great.

Lessons for the men: Aine Tighe should be teaching our young forwards how and when to lead; vision of Kiara Bowers should be compulsory on how to stay on your feet, stay in the game and how to tackle. Ebony Antonio is the model winger, both defensively and forward, her passing to leading forwards was superb. And finally nothing can beat the Emma O'Driscoll .back flip after a win.

I’m assuming that you are being deliberately provocative Hypen as the alternative would be a sad state of affairs, and would reflect worse on you than apparent “woke” thoughts do on others.

The women’s game can’t be compared to the men’s comp. To do so would be simplistic in the extreme and show a complete lack of understanding when it comes to any sport. Do you also dismiss world class female tennis, swimming, athletics etc etc because they aren’t as fast or strong as the male version? Do you dismiss the reality that the men’s game has been highly professional for decades while the women’s game has barely just got off the ground? If so, I hope you don’t have a daughter, sister, partner etc that shows some talent in her sports.

Yeah well done to Kara Antonio.

Let's hope she stays involved in the game - sounds like she will.

I think back to Kara as one of the select group of female players who helped launch the AFLW league (as well as the Fremantle AFLW side of course) by coming to it as already experienced footy players, setting the standard for many of the other initial AFLW players who were talented athletes but often from other codes/sports. Players like Kara were already at AFLW level, and they showed the way for the newcomers. It's different now, with young female players coming along with footy backgrounds.

Even though Kiara Bowers is no doubt one of the best ever AFLW players, she was injured with a knee and didn't play for the first few AFLW seasons - but Kara was showing how she got the 'Juddy' name as a midfielder.
