If this is true we are getting bent over. Blake Acres had a fantastic season for us and is finally starting to show his worth. Our best player in the win down at Geelong this year and our best player in the loosing semi final. He was even touted as an all Australian wingman prior to his injury. Out of all the players leaving this one for me just doesn’t make any sense.

That was speculation by Acres manager Colin Young who will likely be the one trying to broker a deal between Freo and Carlton for Acres. He's the one who states the 3rd round pick should be fair so the source is the person negotiating the deal for Acres. He has a bias of wanting the trade to happen.

If Carlton finish 8th next season which is every chance given their progress and the age of their list, the best we could hope for is pick 47. That would be dropped for each father/son or academy player selected before it of which there are often at least half a dozen by that point to be conservative. So a pick in the 50's, if not later is what we are dealing with here.

A player taken at that point in the draft is purely speculative and not likely to amount to much, a far cry from a player who was on target for All Australian in his position this season and still has 4/5yrs of good footy left. There are teams who would absolutely grab him in the pre-season draft ahead of Carlton (that would like him, have the salary cap room and fulfill the Melbourne based requirement) so the threat of walking him and not completing a deal is more of a risk to Carlton.

If they want Acres which they've shown they do by offering more than us for his services with a sizeable contract, they should pay for him. Their second round pick is currently 28 which will drop a number of spots after f/s and academy picks, we'll take that as a minimum.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

Spot on Biz, Colin Young is a used car salesman. Anything that comes out of the blokes mouth is absolute drivel.

I’m with Biz. If we are only offered a third round pick, let him go to the draft and he can play with one of the bottom 10 teams who will draft him before Carlton.

That said, rumours around our very low contract offer are concerning. Surely he is worth more than a one year contract or $250k per season.

Was it Carlton who forced our hand early on the Henry pick? No point doing them any favours - Surely pettiness can be factored into the decision making process.

Bozza, I don't think Acres was in our best 3 in either of those games, and maybe Carlton have a fair idea of what he is worth.

Hi RM. Clearly you where watching a different game to the rest of us including the coaches and the umpires. In round 7 Acres topped the coaches votes with 9 equal with Stewart and also got 1 Brownlow vote. I had him in our best 3 in the loosing semi final also. I think you will find most did.

If Freo are low-balling their contract offer to Blake they will accept a low-ball trade too. I don't get it myself, I can only assume they've got a replacement ready in-house or in-mind.

I'll add - looks like Geelong are cutting Quinton Narkle loose.

I like your way of looking at it Biz. We'd likely get 2 - 3 good seasons out of Acres. So maybe 60 games. He needs to be replaced by a pick that would likely play 60 AFL games. And I'll go out on a limb and say that the average number of games played by those picked in the bottom half of the 3rd round of the draw is less than 60. And let's not talk about Lachie Neale...

We seemed to play better before his injury and after his injury. Seems we’ve been hurt by a couple of low ball offers. Logue early yin negotiations and Acres at the end. We opened the door mid season to other clubs interests. 500k over 4 was fair if we offered it early.
Clarkson seems pretty confident he can make something of Logue. He knew what Dawson was, and coached Burgoyne as a back. Had a reasonable handle on Lake as well. I know who I’m listening to.
Anyone believing 100-200k a year with a guaranteed game isn’t attractive isn’t living in reality.
Geelong has a policy of never paying on potential. We’ve undercut our existing playing list for a player with huge potential.
