Remind me what the point of an AFL indigenous liaison officer is? Surely they are all ducking for cover as well, starting with Tanya Hosch. They clearly have no rapport with the Indigenous players to the point where the players concerned could approach them to bring this to their attention.

I’d probably push back a little on things like Indigenous round, and welcome to country being lip service. I think they are meaningful and important in their own way.

Not allowing awful, and probably racist, people to do awful, and probably racist things is a different and maybe unrelated thing managed by different and probably unrelated people.

I don’t think you run down one good thing because you’ve failed at the other bigger thing. Just do better at the other bigger thing better.

If you are not following through on making the league a safe place for Indigenous footballers, and actively perusing their interests and encouraging their participation in the sport then the Indigenous Round is literally lip service. They shouldn't get rid of the round, they should make it mean something.

And it was absolutely lip service to have a welcome to country and say that you "acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the land" and then immediately after stand in silence for the dead monarch.

The argument is that this is not a one off issue, this is the bubbling over of an attitude that has been festering for many years in the AFL and they do not want to confront it.

So just to be clear, the AFL’s solution is to create an external review to investigate the first external review.
Given that two clubs so far have had reviews into whether there is any systemic racism within their walls, and the results of both have been horrendous, perhaps the AFL needs to investigate systemic racism as a league-wide problem, and not just try to control each PR disaster as it pops up, whack-a-mole style.
