Horrendous, I’m still struggling to get my head around the nastiness of it all.
I wonder how many other players knew about this, within and outside Hawthorn. I can’t help but wonder now how significant it was that WC won over Kelly by marketing itself as a ‘family club’. If you’re a player with a growing family, you want to avoid the clubs that pressure you to abort your babies.
Has Clarke stood down yet or is he MIA?

That is quite possibly the most damning and harrowing article I've ever read regarding AFL footballers. It makes me sick to think young people going through so much, were isolated and mistreated horribly by people they should have been able to trust.

Everyone involved in this however complicit, should be losing any role that requires interaction with players at both AFL and community level. Pending what the effected families want, i'd like to see the Vic government and law get involved.

When Josh Simpson was cast aside by RL, I was adamant in the clubs mistreatment of a young player and his young family. I hope each club carries out a thorough review into their own treatment of indigenous players and sets themselves to do FAR better in the future.

It was a very simple argument when Simpson was cast aside, different players require differing help and support to succeed. It should never be a blanket rule for everyone when everyone has different issues, upbringing and various things effecting their lives and decision making. Good coaches and clubs work with players to navigate those and get the best out of players not just on but off the field.

We were severely lacking at the time and I hope that never happens again in the future.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

I understand that this won’t go down well as there is no reason to disbelieve the accusations (quite the opposite), but before we hang the accused we need to leave some room for their response. So far we’ve heard one side of the situation, which I accept is compelling.

Please don’t read the above as a defence of Clarkson and Fagan as I’d be very happy for their heads to roll if the evidence supports that outcome.

WTB, according to ABC radio, they were asked to respond to the news article and given 24 hours to do so before the ABC published it. Neither responded.

Were Fagan and Clarkson ask to respond?

I think you may have misread my post. Responding to a news item after the accusations are made public is different to contributing to the review before it is finalised.

Nah, get in now before his lawyers start forcing everyone to refer to him as "Alistair Clarkson who strenuously denies the allegation".

It's my understanding Hawthorn carried out this review and gave it to the AFL a while ago (at least a week). If they didn't consult the coaches at the basis of the findings, both Hawthorn and the AFL have seriously messed up. I find it hard to believe they wouldn't have asked Clarkson/Fagan a few questions though.

My optics of it, looks like the AFL were sitting on the report and waiting for a time to release it where it'd get less attention and the consequences for those involved would be less dire. The ABC news article has forced their hand and this is one of the few times in football news reporting that a journalist has actually done the right thing and reported well (albeit I'm sure they have a vested interest in breaking the story).

I remember that the management of Josh Simpson was very much wanting and I was well disappointed in the club but gee that pales in comparison to this report. To coerce someone to terminate a pregnancy is completely outrageous and beggars belief. The AFL cannot complete an internal review on this. I mean, review all you like, but this is workplace sponsored systematic racism, bullying and abuse. I expect the highest offices in the land to respond.

As difficult as that was to read, we are going to need to brace ourselves because I fear the worst is still to come in the form of an avalanche.

As I followed the Junior Rioli and West Coast story over the last few weeks, I wondered, not for the first time, what the word “support” really means in footyclubland.
I wouldn’t be at all surprised if Hawthorn claimed they were “supporting” these young fellas and their families. That what they mean by “support” is doing whatever it takes, in their eyes at least, to get the most and best football out of the players, even if it meant misery, the destruction of relationships and even the life of the unborn.
I don’t want to use this awful exposure as an opportunity to have a go at West Coast, but would they have provided the support they say they gave Rioli if it was obvious he would never play again?

I'm tending to agree with WTB in his anticipation of a response from the accused. All the reported speech from the (so far) three players and their families has the appearance of being massaged, if not ghost-written, for maximum effect.

And the effect is horrendous. If all or indeed any of the underlying facts as reported are found to be true, then those three accused men should be immediately dismissed from their positions within the AFL.

Clearly we haven't heard the full story yet, and I believe the report has existed for much longer than a week, so by now we should be expecting a very detailed response from all three accused. It won't be enough for the reported details to be "strenuously denied". All the alleged details will need to be addressed.

I agree with the posters who want a similar review carried out by Freo...to me it's imperative and urgent, and may well even be underway. Additionally, I'd be very interested in reading comments about this matter from people like Franklin, Shaun Burgoyne and Cyril Rioli, as well as Michaels Johnson and Walters.

And the denials by Hodge about knowing anything of what's been alleged smack of something lacking in a leader...I wonder what Sam Mitchell has to say about it too.

Obviously very important to hear from the other people involved, although I tend to think that the time to speak out was when they were in the room where Clarkson was telling people to abort their unborn children.
