You are kidding, Blockerhall. You are fair dinkum taking the @#$$. You know their stupid dandy Andy football programme/competition is more sacred to them and their piss ant brand and that the scholarships flow from this focus.

We've both seen it. Increase in aboriginal players from PSA schools indeed!

Sam Powell Pepper didn't stay at Mt Lawley High School long, did he?

so, the general consensus here then is that, the first step towards eliminating racism in AFL clubs (and the nation more broadly) is either to tear down all private schools or, failing that, make sure they stop offering scholarships to indigenous kids?

no wonder I'm looking to Alexi Sayle for guidance

You're just trolling hypen now.

Football clubs need to correct their institutional bias and stop putting a premium on what school people go to.

They've created this mythology that a certain type of person is too big a risk. Coincidentally, the low risk people look just like they do and have a background just like they did. Somehow being exactly like the people letting them in the door is seen as a virtue.

Yet, Alistair Clarkson is white and went to a nice boarding school but it turns out he's racist who has derailed the entire AFL Grand Final week, and overshadowed the mourning of the Queen.

Do you think anyone is going to be looking through the potential draftees after this and go - "Oh, he's white and went to boarding school in Ballarat...not worth the risk."?

I think you're over rating that mythology among the issues here - yes, there's institutionalised and systemic biases but there's also utter sociopaths who will manage to behave like arses no matter what policies and structures are in place.

if there's substance to these allegations then Clarko and Burt would seem to fall into that category and be unemployable even in the ideal model of merit/talent based egalitarianism

is it a problem for you that Liam Henry went to Christchurch? is Freo complicit in perpetuating racism and oppression by drafting him from there?

“…and overshadowed the mourning of the Queen.”

Shane, keep talking like that and freofan58 might forgive you.

Jezaargh, if there were not so much of the institutionalised and systemic biases, in the offices of footy clubs and even, the AFL, maybe the utter sociopaths who will manage to behave like arses would be more easily identified and dealt with appropriately.

I don’t know about the whole public school private school debate but I’m pretty sure that reputational risk is going to outweigh the ability of a footballer soon if it’s not already, when considering the drafting of a player.
That can only disadvantage those that are perhaps already disadvantaged.
The AFL has traded on the history of indigenous football and has an opportunity here to show real leadership. They have accepted billions of dollars - how about using some of it to truly identify the wrongs and make a meaningful plan for the future.
Be brave - the world might thank you for it.

agree RM, but I can't see how attacking private school scholarship systems is the first step in solving that.

maybe less administrators who only get the job because they played AFL or were the good mate of the last guy in charge could help. I await with interest to see who gets the gig after Gil and what her first move will be...

I was attacking the premise that PSA schools are in some altruistic fashion contributing to more First Nation players in the AFL.

They are a business, their product is not a service, it's a membership. And a very very exclusive one, for life.

You put it on yourself to defend the existence of these schools.

An inevitable, justified and overdue response from the Players Association. Given that our Chairman is “open” to the concept of a review, he should now expedite it.

Focus diversion. Spread the story, search for extenuating content and make use of it. This is how the media works.

But there it is - one club, a handful of individuals. Focus on that and then look at the absolute inability of the AwFL's Integrity unit to keep a check on what the hell is going on. Only then should the periphery be explored.

Not sure we’d come out as smelling like roses to be honest, I think the whole handling of Simpson would raise a few eyebrows if we heard his and his family’s side of the story in full detail, granted most of those involved (Bond, Lyon, The Steve’s) have left the club now.
