TOPIC: Adelaide and Eddie

Adelaide should now be roundly condemned for the handling of their infamous preseason camp. In light of some of the abhorrent things that occurred and were said to Eddie Betts * the AFL has to revisit its investigation of the event and explain why they (and Adelaide) took no action at that time. Assuming Eddie’s version is accurate, if no sanctions occur now, the AFL loses any remnants of credibility.

*imagine being told at a work sponsored event that you will be a s**t father because you had a single mother.

Yes. The AwFL's 'Integrity' unit has dropped more balls than a pinball machine.

It is truly appalling, on so many levels.

Adelaide were the extreme end of it but there was a serious culture issue in the league that led to this idea of torturing people.

People get paid like they are leaders in their profession and you still get ideas like psychological abuse or training to breaking point. Or even this idea that you should only draft footballers who go to the right schools, or based on their parent's marital status. Just superstition and nonsense ideas that the industry keeps feeding itself.

It's a cowboy show sometimes.

the idea of bullying and belittling people to build resilience is a bizarre one

And now they put it on prime time tv and call it SAS Australia.

Nothings changed.

I'd like to hear something from the firm the Crows hired to run the camp - their psychological methods and previous success stories etc. They sound like a militant, corporate, religious sect that are not getting any heat for any of this.

I can remember when I was an apprentice working in the Pilbara in the early Eighties.

The company who I worked for thought it would be a good idea to get all the apprentices together put them on a bus and take them into the middle of nowhere. Told to remove all our clothes and then given a hessian sack to wear (hessian is rough and those sensitive parts of your body became quite raw from chaffing).

We were given instructions on where to go and find water and food. When we got to the location there was water and a sheep tied up. If we wanted to eat we would have to kill the sheep. Needless to say, no one killed the sheep. The temperature was mid 30's every day.

We were stuck out there for a week. Yes, this was organised by two employees of the company who were former SAS soldiers.

When we got back there was an uproar and nothing like this happened again. The two former SAS soldiers left just after that.

To hear about this stuff is just awful. Football, professional or otherwise, isn't some kind of stupid Navy Seals operation that condones the belittlement of your team members to prepare them to execute their opposition. It just isn't.

I would've thought - as most would believe - that there were enough checks/balances in the system to stop some yahoo fools from playing power-over exercises before they happen. But apparently not - if there is a system it's an illusory construct. That's super disappointing on so many levels I can't even begin to unpick it.

I grew up laughing at those Hollywood movies of US Marine 'grunts' getting yelled at by their drill sergeant - as if one of them wouldn't lean forward and bite the knob's nose off. Then you see the ridiculous 'power stance' line-up before the bounce that Adelaide did thinking they might as well drop their daks and stuff their thumbs in their bums. It's just stupid to think that anyone could come up with such an embarrassing idea.

That camp hurt people in a serious way, a very very serious way. Years later it still affects Eddie - the Crows, the AwFL, the ALFPA need to seriously fix this fast.

This was Collective Minds running flak at the time, I'm sure they, like the Crows (pers. comm Mark Ricciuto) have 'moved on', or at least would like to believe so. There appears to be a significant deficits in accounts from both sides reading their guff. For the record Don Pyke once walked me in a social game of softball. I think that speaks to the calibre of the bloke.

Collective minds certainly were litigious, don't worry about that. They went hard against any journo running details from the camp, including Caro.

I would've stepped out of the crease and slugged one towards the pitcher's mound.
