TOPIC: Luke Jackson

Performance is the only true indicator, he does not justify more than 2 first round high picks , his stats say so.

Imagine if he, a 20-year-old, does perform in the future at Freo, to justify more than that.

The best part of all this is he wants to come back to WA to play footy, and he doesn’t want to join West Coast. This is wonderful in and of itself.

Performance is the only true indicator. As a 19yo tall turning a GF to win a premiership, his performance demands at least 2 top 5 picks. We are getting him for a bargain.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

Name a better young 20 yr old key forward/ruck going around PP. There's a reason that they always go so high in the drafts, and it's because they're so hard to come by.
His 16 goals for the season last year was equal to Gawn as the most by any ruckman/forward except for Lobb, plus he spent far more time in the ruck than lobb did

Still don't see him as a strong ruck/forward like Lobb. Will probably be a good ruck and round the ground tall and we'd be crazy not to get him if the price is right. But he's not likely to be a club-maker. Watch his game last night. Serviceable, but not a game influencer.

To be fair, no Melbourne player was a game influencer last night.

Is Lobb definitely still wanting to leave?
If he chooses to stay (and I hope he does) then what with Jackson?

Any team would have Jackson, and I’d love him at Freo, but Niall’s point seems to be that Freo needs an elite young forward and Jackson is most likely an elite young ruckman who can play forward a bit. Hodor is our reigning best and fairest, can ruck all day, and while he’s a serviceable forward you’d still want him playing 70% game time in the ruck. Do you want to pay and trade for Jackson to play 30% to his strengths each week? We’d be investing a lot in one-and-a-half positions we’ve got covered. It seems duplicative.

I’m sure Jackson will be a serviceable forward, but I think people underestimate forward craft. Amiss showed more forward instincts in his first game than Tabs did in his first 7 years. NicNat has all the physical tools to be an elite forward, and doesn’t influence the game as a forward at all. Fyfe grew into one of the greatest goal-kicking midfielders ever, but hasn’t set the world on fire as a permanent forward. Are we sure Jackson can be an elite forward?

Lobb is close to the ideal second ruck / forward. We gave up (roughly) a mid-first-rounder to get him as a known quantity and in his prime a 25. If that’s the going rate for Jackson then of course grab him but we know it’s not. With Gawn the wrong side of 30 Jackson is probably worth more to Melbourne than us, meaning we’re going to need to send a fair bit their way to get him.

I hope we have a serious crack at Jackson, but more than that I hope we know when to walk away.

I am sure Jackson can be an elite forward.

You've spent years prognosticating how Lobb and Taberner couldn't work in the same forward line. Don't change your tune now and shift the same-framed looking glass on to Jackson with an added pair of is-he-really-that-good tweezers.

I’m glad some of you aren’t on our recruiting team. You dont get to many chances to bring a player like this to your football club. Jackson will bring sponsors and fans to Fremantle. What he’s already shown as a key position player at his club before the age of 20 shows what his ceiling could be.

It’s not a prognostication Mushroom. We’re currently sitting in the top 4 in the league and we’re ranked 11th in the league for scoring goals. We’re winning despite our forward line not because of it. Lobb and Tabs should amplify each other, and instead it seems they each play better as a solo-artist.

Since Lobb and Tabs have led our forward line here’s where we have ranked in terms of goals scored.

2022: 11th
2021: 16th
2020: 15th
2019: 16th

Amiss shapes to be part of the solution, and it’s reasonable to think that he and Jackson could form a good combo.

But it’s also reasonable to ask what type of forward we’re recruiting if that’s where Jackson is going to spend most of his time. Are we getting a Cameron, Curnow, Hawkins, Naughton, Lynch, Franklin or McKay type player, or are we getting a better version of Rory Lobb or Kurt Tippett? If I had to guess it’s the latter, and that’s fine, they are really valuable players, but it should temper what we’re offering Melbourne because what we really need for the next 5 years is a genuine key forward.
