Rory is contracted. Unfortunately if we can't adequately replace him or if it leaves too much of a gap on our list he stays. That's exactly what happened last year. I'm not sure a 29 year old would purposely have a lean year if he's disgruntled. I would of thought that would significantly decrease your chance of ending up at your team of choice the following year.

This may have been covered somewhere in the last 17 pages but can someone clarify Jackson's contractual situation? If he is out of contract, is the following correct - he either arranges a trade that Melbourne is happy with or he goes in one of the end of year drafts. If it is the later, he nominates a salary and clubs can choose to pick him up in the pre-season (?) draft (starting with N,Melb and then WCE). Freo wouldn't get a bite until well into the processes.

If the above is correct, WCE could potentially have a strong hand if Freo cant swing a deal that Melbourne is happy with. If WCE punt on the salary cap increasing significantly over the coming years due to the new TV rights deal and they take into account that their current salary cap pressure will be short lived (as they have a lot of old players about to exit), they could offer a long term deal with a big back end and grab Jackson via the draft without needing to trade much at all (not that I think Melbourne would let that happen).

My only hope is that we don't sell the farm to get Jackson (think Kelly at WCE). Recent history has shown the importance of a balanced team versus a few over paid individuals.

HI Walter, Jackson is out of contract. You can only nominate a salary for the PSD not the national draft. For a player of his quality to be walked to the pre season draft is un heard of. The last in memory was Jack Martin when Gold Coast refused the offer from Carlton and they decided to make a stand. GC where sick of players moving every year and decided enough is enough and let him walk. That won't happen with Jackson as the Dees simply loose too much ie the player and nothing in return.

Talking about "big back-ends". Isn't that the deal Nic Nat ended up with...

Thanks Biz, I missed that article. Was glad to read someone else putting it down on paper because it felt a little bit hopeful/silly when I was recently talking about effectively 'ruck-roving' Jackson. I'm not even sure I remember the the last time I heard someone talk about a ruckrover in the AFL, its all 'big-bodied midfielders' under the followers umbrella. Was there a decree declaring non uti that I missed sometime this century?

Thaks for the responses to my last post.
Given that Jackson's camp has now indicated that they are happy to deal with both WCE or Freo, why are Freo still considered to have the inside run?
- he may be more valuable to WCE as Freo dont have a natural spot for Jackson whereas WCE need a replacement for NicNat
- Salary won't be a problem for either team
- WCE have a better draft hand (although that might change given the probable incoming picks to Freo for Lobb Logue and Acres).
- While Freo are in a "premiership window" now, Jackson has already won a premiership and he has plenty of years left to work on one with WCE.

I can see the Eagles making this very difficult for Freo now that Jackson is open to offers from both.

Hiroshi and those with memories too long about selling the farm for players and references to McCarthy and Hogan; the McCarthy trade wasn't on Peter Bell's watch at all and the Hogan Trade was very much committed to and set motion long before Bell came on board (the trade happened 11 days after Bell joined as Operation manager). Since then it feels like we have been on the right side of every trade , particularly at the time of the trade but remarkably even with the benefit of hindsight the great majority have worked out in our favour. Have faith!

Edit: yes Bell was on the board before becoming OPs Manager but wasn't hands on doing these deals. He was running a radio program from memory.

I hope Jackson brought the "premiership window" over with him... or wouldn't they allow it on the plane?

Other than the use of the words "Big Goomba" , I also enjoyed Morgan's touted future forwardline...except, it makes no mention of Freddy or Schulz...

There was a time at fremantle that we used to get excited that a 'small forward' kicked 20 odd goals a year.... Clive ,Mayney, Meddy, probably Croad & Mann, were lauded when they got to more than 1 a game territory, if, i remember correctly....

Anyway, Freddy has kicked 28, and Schultzy did 30 this year....

That's suggestive that they might be a goer down that end again....well before Sturt gets a go, I reckon....

Your points are easily answered Walter and I'm sure I've covered off most in earlier stages of this thread.

I) You are presuming his natural spot in a side is as a lead ruckman however he is only 199cm and is far more suited as a back up ruckman. He is also incredibly athletic and his size is far better used around the ground which is exactly where Freo intend to use him. Refer to the article I linked a couple hours ago.

II) Salary is very much a problem for the OOFTIT's. They have a tonne of cash locked up in players with existing contracts with very little wiggle room. Freo can outbid them reasonably easily (Logue offered $500K/yr, Lobb set to be on $700K/yr, Mundy retiring, excess room in the salary cap in addition to these) however the deal for Jackson is likely to be around $7-800K pending what happens from here.

III) The OOFTIT's do not have a better draft hand. They would have to request the AFL allow them to use pick 2 considering they aren't allowed to trade a first round pick this year. Even if the AFL allowed that for some reason, their list manager Rohan O'Brien went on radio today and basically said they won't be trading out pick 2. It would also be incredibly silly to out bid us for Jackson considering where their list is at and the complete lack of youth on it. They need all their draft picks. Additionally as you mention, if others are on their way out (Lobb, Acres and Tucker are likely), we'll be improving our picks.

IV) The OOFTIT's have literally no good youth, they are going to be at the bottom of the ladder for quite a while. In contrast, we are almost all youth and are likely to be towards the top of the ladder for an extended period. There is no way you can paint them as an attractive proposition, it's just a dumb suggestion.

I can't see the OOFTIT's making anything difficult. Melbourne and the media will be the ones making things difficult trying to build up a case for a higher price. Try not to buy into the rubbish.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

I just meant marking targets Cletus. Lobb is an elite contested mark but so is Tabs. The other blokes I mentioned are still reasonable targets as marking players.

Switta, Schultz, Freddy and Walters all automatic selections to round out whatever combination of marking players gets picked.

With no knowledge whatsoever about how we are going about getting Jackson, I'd be amazed if the Eagles don't try to make us pay through the nose in this transaction. I just hope that if by some remote possibility that they end up outbidding us, then they have a similar situation again that they now have as a result of the Kelly deal.
