Hey, let's go for Ben Brown then. He'll be cheaper and has had a couple of great finals hasn't he? Admittedly doesn't do any ruck work, tackle or compete once the ball hits the ground but he's older and far more experienced.

Ok so he’s young and learning, ‘and has shown he can win games off his own back’, what games were those?

Some guys appear to know where to go to get the ball, he doesn’t, at this stage.

He can jump, but there’s a bloke down the road that does that and isn’t rated much here.

I hope if he comes to Freo we can develop him more than what’s apparent at the moment.

Have to say his moustache doesn’t look great either ….. he’s young he’s had a few good games quite a while ago so why should we throw our first round picks? because that’s what Melbourne will expect this year first round pick and our next year first…..from what he’s shown I can’t justify that.

The problem with these discussions is that people are assessing Jackson against their own expectation on what the trade will look like.

Biz has said that our next two first round picks (in the mid teens) is enough to get it done. I’m not sure that’s true, but let’s assume it is.

He’s a great talent who regressed in the second half of this year. It’s easy to look past if it’s a minor injury but the choice appears to be accept he’s regressed or he’s a big man carrying an injury and that Melbourne has been fine running him into the ground.

Neither of those options make you feel great about trading a lot to add a second very good young ruckman.

Okay, so it's pretty obvious Lobb is leaving, so for those that don't want Jackson, let's hear some alternative ruckman/forwards. And please don't say Meek who is not a forward or Treacy who is 193cm, the same as a number of midfielders.

Jackson's not a forward either...

Basically, we are looking for a player to fill Lobb's role in the forward line and kick goals. I think we can cover the loss of Acres and even Logue (but I hope he stays). The question is, is Jackson able to do this role? Under current indications the answer is - no.
I would like to see us pursue, if possible, Mitch Georgiades or (and this is a new name to consider) Ash Johnson (he's playing tonight for the Pies). They are not exact Lobb substitutes but they are proven forwards who kick goals. There are others like McDonald or even Naughton.
Having said all that Jackson coming to Freo appears to be set in stone.

Lobb wins 7 hit outs a game, about the same as barely part-timers like Sam Reid for Sydney and Finlayson for Port. In two years the AFL will have implemented the last kick boundary rule between the arcs. A ruck/forward is a luxury not a need.

Darcy can do 90% of contests and you get one or two people to take a handful of contests a game.

Jackson is a huge talent and I’m happy to grab him, but no-one looks at Freo and thinks the ruck is a weak link, and no-one right now looks at Jackson and thinks he’ll help our forward line; which is why the question of what we give up looms so large.

Maybe Jackson replaces Acres on the wing and pinch hits in the ruck when Darcy needs a break.

Of course you would go for Jackson. He's what, 20? He's not 27 and is what he is - Jackson can be developed into who you need him to be. No brainer.

I wouldn't be planning based on a potential rule change, years down the track. Especially one that is unlikely to come in.

Noddy, Jackson threw Melbourne on his back in a grand final and destroyed the Dogs. There's no better reference. He's done that several times both before and after as a kid, that's unheard of for a teenage tall.

People need to remove the idea that Jackson is just a ruckman from their minds. He's the most athletic tall to enter the AFL, possibly ever. His ceiling is huge and what he could achieve is massive. Even if he gets no where near that, he'll be an incredibly good footballer and is already very good.

As for Ash Johnson, he isn't proven at all. He's played 7 games. Georgiades is an undersized key forward and is shorter than Mundy. He shows glimpses but is contracted and not going anywhere soon. McDonald and Naughton also have long term contracts and aren't moving.

In any case, I've said it a few times but Jackson could play a lot of positions and running around as a midfielder, roving to Darcy is definitely one of them. The sky is the limit with Jackson and he's coming to Freo. Jump on board the kid.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

Ash Johnson is Benning’s brother, as is McAdam from the crows, who knew!

“REACHING the AFL was never part of Ash Johnson's plan as a teenager. It still wasn't when he turned 20, but that changed when his brother Shane McAdam and cousin Jy Farrar got drafted in consecutive years.”

“Johnson and McAdam's brother, Eric Benning, was selected by Fremantle last year,”
