Taking a look at the ladder it shows a couple of telling things.
FIrstly, how good Freo’s defence is a stopping other teams from scoring. Up there with the best, if not the best.
When it comes to the other end, points for, Freo are down there with GWS, Hawthorn, Essendon, Adelaide.
It seems to come from long periods in games where Freo just look limp moving forward. Never looking like generating a dangerous scoring opportunity. High, slow balls in to congestion. Skirting around outside the 50 arc. Waiting for a perfect lead or a lead deep to the pocket and floating the kick rather than quickly going to the one-on-one and backing the team mate to win it to ground and goal or find another team mate moving past.
The midfield hasn’t been beaten that many times this season to suggest it is all the mids doing. The forward patterns need work. It’s not who the blokes are, or their size. It’s how they do it and where they be. Again. Still.
It’s the missing link and why Freo always look to be teetering and vulnerable to coming up dud in mid-stakes games when you can beat Freo by a scoring run-on that gets you to a whopping 62 points.
