Team rule. Hold onto the railing or come a gutser and if you see someone not following team rules ignore them lest ye come a gutser too.

When is international medieval speak day anyway?

the sports science aspect of this appears to be getting short shrift here.

the emerging evidence is that a little as one standard drink does affect recovery. devices such as whoop, Apple watch etc. monitoring heat rate and sleep have recently compiled overwhelming evidence.

so it's almost certain that if a player has a beer after a game it will impede their ability to recover before a midweek intensity session if there is less than 7 day break between games (whether this impediment is miniscule or not i don't know but it will certainly occur). they will then train flat and then likely play flat on the weekend.

and not knowing any of the above we will question their endeavour, or wonder if they are injured etc.

So what you're saying is that there should be a team rule that bans drinking altogether.

There's much stronger evidence that the week of extreme alcohol drinking post a grand final win does significantly more long term damage then anything Freddy did.
It's a matter of proportionality, common sense and dare I say, passing the pub test.
Seems to be surprisingly lacking in many of these posts.

Sports science would say that 8 to 10 hrs of sleep every night is optimum for performance.
Lets suspend players for not being in bed by 8pm each night.

Old man Mundy would be smart enough to take a book to bed to read under the covers with his headlight.
Young Freddy would forget to turn the kitchen light off so would deserve to be suspected for flagrant team rule breaking.

I'm not sure what all the fuss is about here. I'm assuming that all the players and coaching staff had some say in the rules that were set and the consequences if they were breached.

Whether some think it's too punitive is not the point. Why have any team rules at all if when one is broken you ignore it.

They've shown great commitment on and off the field this year and consequently compared to the slime up the road have done far better with players not missing games with covid, and not out at nightclubs celebrating 100 pt losses.

Everyone seems to be working for the greater good of the club and team mates, and yes at times (i hope)minor issues like this might take place. Deal with them quickly like this and move on.

When we have lost players through injury, illness or suspension, we've still won. It's shown what great depth we've finally got. No player is an essential at this stage and we seem to be able to cover for just about anyone. Competition for places is tough so if you want to be part of the success then be willing to make some sacrifices along the way.

As previously mentioned if the players (you know, those blokes who it actually impacts) disagree with the rule, then they can remove it or change it.

I guess all those young (and older) blokes who have re-signed with Freo over the last few years (and were probably not present when the rule was introduced) must reallllllly disagree with the rule hey?

They could vote to change it. But they haven't.
They could ask for a trade. But a vast majority haven't.
They could not renew their contracts. But the vast majority do.
They could not follow the rule. But this is the first instance in how many years?
Heck, they could speak out (publicly or anonymous) to raise how difficult their work conditions are. But they haven't - or have I missed all the cases taken before the fair work act?

They must reallly hate that rule.

Huh - Freddy himself extended his original contract didn't he? Oh, he must not have realised the rule was in place, and *somehow* fluked it and managed to not breach it in his few years at the club.

Maybe they will do all those things now that the "issue" is out in the open. Or not.

Let's wait and see...

Although, CA, it's a bit hard to go out and celebrate 100 point losses if you are not having any 100 point losses.

I had a close association with somebody that was at a WAFL club. I heard many conversations over time about that the club was getting it wrong to have players, play at their best. Anyhow he is now a very very good country footballer.
I have no idea how to build an AFL premiership team but I’m backing this bunch have a better clue than me.

Of course, there’s no team rule than bans drinking altogether. Just one, it appears, that bans it if there’s a 6-day break between games.

Also, no need to change the subject - discussing the effects of alcohol then pivot to sleep? Mundy’s sleep habits? Huh?

But since you brought it up, I remember seeing something from the FFC website where players self-report their sleep hours on road trips, and clubs offer help with sleep tips. So, yes, sleep is really important for pro athletes, as is honesty and trust.

As for suspending players for ‘not being in bed by 8 pm, well, that’s just a bit of a hyperbole, isn’t it?
