It's a silly rule, likely a remnant from years ago and not started by the young group of players we have.

A more common sense approach should be adopted and not a black and white rule (especially with ridiculous punishments for incredibly minor acts). If a player wants to have a glass of wine with their dinner or a celebratory beer or two after a good performance, there is no harm to their performance the following week. It would be a similar impact to having a cheat meal and eating something unhealthy.

If a player went and got smashed and it impacted their preparation then I'd be all for suspending them. This is way over the top regardless of whatever silly rules anyone has made. Moreover, I think the players should be encouraged to enjoy their wins and relax before moving straight into rigid training for the next paid appearance.

Don't forget, there will be a large monetary loss for Freddy missing out on match fees, damage to his reputation and media scrutiny. It's a ridiculous response for mine.

The difference between a beer after a game or skulling a carton and getting blind are drastic. They should not be punished the same way.

If Freddy has a beer after a good win and went home with no ill effects, he shouldn't be punished as if he went out bashing people at a restaurant, off his face. There are degrees to things rather than straight black and white. Covering everyone with the same blanket does not bode well and allow all to flourish.

1) the "team buy in" and commitment is probably just as important if not more important than the effect of alcohol on fitness/performance

2) sometimes having a zero tolerance approach is just easier than drawing a set of ever shifting arbitrary lines (1 x stubby of 7% NEIPA or 2 x stubbies of 3.5% piss weak Lager is ok but a shot of tequila is not, no more than 120ml of red wine, unless you are over 100kg in which case blah blah blah)

Do we actually know how much he drank?
Doesn’t say anywhere.
What we do know is that he was the one who confessed to having a drink (or two or three…)
I would guess from that confession, he was perhaps under performing in training and questions were asked… they were probably more concerned about his well being and health.
Personally, I’m really glad they are watching over our boys like this, whatever their reasons for doing so, their physical, and especially mental health is of utmost importance.
Whether we think the ban is harsh or not, the guidelines have been set by the players. It’s their call, not ours.

It's a player rule. They bought in to it, even if it was set 5 years ago.

If the players don't like it, get rid of it.

Or change it. If the players think, based on the advice they receive, that "X standard drink N nights before the game is acceptable", then they can change it to that.

If the players want to keep it, then keep it and stick to it.

Maybe they will change it after this incident, or after this season.
Maybe they won't.
But stick by the rules you set yourself, or it's a slippery slope.
