I’ve loved 7 quarters of the last 12 Freddy has played, before that he has probably played a handful of elite quarters in his career. If after that level of performance, he takes it upon himself to break team rules, then he has a lot to learn.
A previous poster mentioned that these type of restrictive rules are too hard to maintain over a long period of time. Being a high functioning AFL player is very hard to maintain 99% of people that enjoy playing footy can’t do it. Nat Fyfe is an absolute champ, I would hazard a guess, at least 50% of his performance comes down to sacrifices he is willing to make.
With spots on the list at a premium they need to be earned, this sends a massive message to the team you need to respect your right to play in the team.
With Switta, Fyfe, Taberner and Walters to return, Freddy’s earned his spot at Peel this week.
Down the road standards appear to have slipped, to the point that supplementary players and fringe AFL players chose to head out to the Hippie club during a Covid outbreak.
Personally I have no idea how many drinks or how the drinks are consumed the rule captures. Team culture seems to be the basis to our current form, I’m backing them in.

I don't blame Freddie for having a drink. I blame the fixtures. Afterall Freddie was following on with what Longmuir said the other week by "not getting ahead of themselves". Yes he was staying in the moment and enjoying the moment... He definitely wasn't thinking about next week just yet and most likely subconsciously thought it was yet another Sunday game.
He probably dobbed himself in when he realized it is a Saturday game.

I’m fond of a beer (or wine, or whisky) and though I’m very conscious of the health consequences of excessive drinking, I recently bought an Apple Watch and I’ve been surprised by how much impact only a couple of drinks has on my sleeping patterns and heart rate etc. I’m not sure what this adds up to for elite athletes but maybe it’s not meaningless.

But I can’t help thinking that any health negatives for a drink or two has to be offset by the mental health benefit of players leading something resembling a normal life, and switching off from footy for a few hours. Especially 5 or 6 days out from a game. I’d rather get an extra year or two out of talented players who enjoyed their footy than burn through players because it’s too much of a grind.

I always find it remarkable how hard we find it to comprehend a life being fulfilling without the consumption of alcohol.
Rioli enjoyed the recreational use of another substance and within his community this would be a common practice. Yet we have an entirely different perspective on this.
I very occasionally over indulge in alcohol. I know many people that don’t touch a drink and seem entirely happy.

I guess my point is not that they have a rule around alcohol consumption. It's that the rule is silly. Can you have a drink on day 6 out from a 7 day game?

The end goal is being prepared for the game. If having a glass of wine with dinner on day 6 impacts performance then fair enough. But it doesn't, we all know that.

Just plain silly. Not as silly as Frederick breaking it though.

If he was drinking EMU, then I understand the ban.

In the past I've worked FIFO to offshore platforms. Many of the sites require you to rock up and blow 0% on the breathalyzer. If it's anything other than 0%, you fly home, thanks for coming, we'll keep your pay for the swing. Do it a few times and they won't ask you to come back: there are plenty of other blokes lined up for a swing on good pay.

One drink the night before would probably be ok, 4-5 probably not. Once you have one, it's pretty easy to go 2...
I always made sure the night before was completely dry - I certainly don't have enough dough in the bank to risk an entire paycheck for one glass of red. If I can go 3 weeks without a tinny, I can go 3 weeks plus one day. First day home however, now that's a different story - starting in the airport on the way south.

Freo are one week from the bye.
The season is, what, 22 weeks long, plus a buy, plus finals if you make it. About half of those weeks you'll have a 7 day break.

Have a beer or 3 on your 7 day breaks, and enjoy them. Have a few during the bye and enjoy it. Have a carton or 5 after your team's season ends.

If you're a taxi driver, don't have a few before your shift starts. If you're a pilot, follow whatever guidelines they set. Same for a soldier on deployment.
If you're a elite sports person, well, follow the guidelines or rules that your team or coach or management set. You're job is to perform at maximum capacity when the time comes. Theirs is to make sure you can deliver at maximum capacity.

Is it a silly rule? Maybe. Are there reasons behind it? Yep. Do the people who give the advice know more about it than most of us. Possibly. Could they be wrong? Yea maybe. And if they're not wrong? Good thing the 'workplace' followed their advice.

I love watching Freddy. Can't wait to see him back. And I'm glad that the team takes getting maximum performance each week as a serious matter. Sure, 6 days might be overkill. But I want a premiership, and I'm sure as hell the players do too. Make a few sacrifices now and then. And enjoy a cold one at the opportunities that you can.

We have all probably played a bit of football when we were younger, but not at the elite level, and some drinking may not have mattered to us, but it matters significantly to both recovery and to match performance for elite level players. For post-match, post-intense physical exercise and pre-match, the consumption of alcohol is a problem physiologically, and also affects judgment. There is a reason the six day rule has been invoked by most clubs.
"based on the available experimental evidence in cellular and rodent-models, athletes should remain wary of ingesting alcohol following intense exercise, focusing instead on effective dietary strategies proven to enhance recovery."
and
"Alcohol can actually result in greater dehydration because of its diuretic effect. Although some athletes believe that beer will provide carbohydrates postexercise, the energy provided by beer (or other alcoholic beverages) does not provide carbohydrate. Drinking alcohol postexercise may actually decrease muscle glycogen synthesis and storage at rest (which would impair future exercise bouts), may negatively impact gluconeogenesis (making new glucose), which would impair exercise performance, and may result in hypoglycemia (low blood glucose) during exercise, again, impairing exercise performance." (Try Google Scholar for more information).
The sad part is that we will really miss Freddy this Saturday. The good part is that this type of discipline should help make him a better footballer in the future.

If we're operating on a 6-day alcohol ban then comparing results up the road, they must be operating on a 6-hour alcohol ban...

ManInPurple: I agree with most of what you have said, however, one of your points needs clarification from the club, i.e. "Do the people who give the (no drinking on a six day break) advice know more about it than most of us."

I'd like to know if it was the club medicos who set the standard or the player leadership group?
- If it is the former and it's based on science, then all good. The players are professional athletes who are being paid serious salaries to be in peak condition.
- If it's the latter, it sounds more like an arbitrary "follow the leader" decision, i.e. because our leadership group have this standard so must everyone else, even if having a drink 6 days before a game does no measurable harm.

Nothing better than a cold can in a hot shower post game.

That what this thread reminded me of guess that's why I was a very average reserves footballer.

Carry on anyway

He's not a taxi driver or a mine worker in an industry of tens of thousands of people. He is one of a tiny group of people in an outcomes based job.

If there was a team rule not to wear green socks on a Tuesday and someone wore green socks, would you really be saying "Everyone else knew to follow the no green socks on Tuesday's rule. It's not a difficult rule to follow, he can wear green socks any other day of the week."

If he went out and had a drink and then underperformed on the training track all week then you would drop him. If he played a bad game then you would drop him. There are 40 people being managed by about 20 people. You don't need blanket rules to keep them in check.
