TOPIC: Logue

So, after the dust/mud has settled, I was surprised to see how many people were denigrating Logue as our escaped goat on the weekend, yes he made some mistakes and as a defender it goes pretty badly wrong, but he has put together a pretty compelling body of work this year when in as far as I was concerned. He is definitely playing angry, which comes with both pluses and minuses. In fact when Longmuir put Aish to the ball when the game was slipping, I thought the better move would have been Logue to CBA in an effort to muscle the ball forward. Anyone care to point out the error of my ways?

Spot on with your assessment. Logue is much maligned and we’ll be damn sorry if we don’t recognize what he currently offers and could offer and leaves. Our coaches have little creative imagination or perception.

People that bag Logue only look for faults. Walters had two howlers which cost us dearly last weekend.

I've long been saying that Griff should be looked at as a midfielder in the mould of a young Pav. He's got the size and mobility to be able to split packs and get the ball out as well as Pav or Fyfe and he's still young enough to evolve in this role. If only JLo and the coaching panel could see it. He could still be swung back into defense if required and could also provide a focal point in the forward line.

It's wet, we are four goals down, Collingwood are harder over the ball and we just can't get anything going out the centre.

Throw Michael Aish on the ball! That'll change everything.

Logue would be brilliant at the contest in the wet.

Well I'm not sure that James' Uncle Michael would have an effect but James Aish has been a reliable go to player for JLo on most occasions. Still there were times on Sunday that Aish was monstered by bigger opponents as he carried the ball into the forward line where a bigger bodied, rampaging Griff may have had a different result.

Who is Michael Aish? Why did I say Michael? Does anyone know why I said Michael?

Sorry hypen. I’d gladly tell you why you said Michael but I’d be cancelled for being ageist.

Sure, tall players are renowned for their clean ball handling and skills below their knees in the wet. Logue into the middle couldn't possibly have gone wrong.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

I think Logue is a really talented defender, and is at his best when he can play off his man a little, go for his marks and take the game on. The problem he faces is he’s probably not quite as good in that role as Cox, who has absolutely wonderful hands and reads the game just slightly better. You could probably say the same about Ryan, Chapman and Young, who are all playing similar roles, albeit at slightly different sizes and experience.

I’m not sure you can have your whole defence, at all times, playing so loose. In that sense, I feel like the balance of our team would be slightly better if Logue could play as a lockdown defender (something like Hamling used to do), but I don’t really think that’s playing to Logue’s strengths. I suspect therein lies the tension.

Now, I might be wrong about all that – bear in mind I thought Zac Dawson was an important part of our defence for our top 4 run – but sadly I feel like he would be more valuable for another team than he is for us.

As for playing in the midfield, I suppose given the logjam in defence it’s worth a go, especially on a game like Sunday’s, but my gut feeling is these days players need to be able to make super-quick decisions as the ball goes through their hands, and also be aware at all times where their teammates are. I’m not sure with our game style you could plonk someone like Logue in and expect it to work.

Perhaps in 1960 tall midfielders weren’t good in the wet, but Bontempelli and that big Carlton bloke Cripps don’t go too bad. A few big ruck types go alright when it’s wet too Jackson, De Koning etc. I’m not saying Logue is at that level…..I’m just saying, times have changed.

Personally I think Logue’s best games were when he played as a true lockdown defender on Curnow and Cameron. He should be told to just take the oppositions best tall out of the game and let all those around him go for the floating intercept mark.
He got the best stats of his career in the gold coast game and we lost as his opponent kicked 4 goals.

In conditions like the last couple of weeks, an aggressive defender like Logue is what you want around the footy whether it is 10 meters out from your goal, or 10 meters out from their goal. Not moving Logue into the action is probably the only mistake JL made in these last 2 games.
