Pretending like there aren't alternative energy solutions that are perfectly viable is sad.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

I too always respect what you say here Cletus, but you're taking it to the nth degree.

I don't hear anybody saying we don't need fossil fuels. We're all sensible enough to know that this is not possible atm, but you seem to be coming across as if this is the way it must be forever and a day.

It's obvious that we need to move away from fossil fuels, and having a company like this as our major sponsor won't last. It's generational change and not just the younger generation on board.

Public opinion has seen tobacco advertising companies dropped from sponsorship, with newer industries such as technology companies stepping in. I too hope to see gambling removed in the not too distant future.

Fossil fuel companies who are not moving to renewables won't be welcome as sponsors, as the public/supporters won't want it.

There are some things (only some) more important than footy. Call me old-fashioned, but for me, it's the existential threat that my children's generation, amplified for the generations that follow, will be facing, and which we're already seeing.

This is no kindly benefactor that we're suggesting removing from our jumpers - it's one of the worst, most irresponsible and greedy companies in the world - and for what? Money. Just money. From the letter:

"Despite claims it is trying to decarbonise, Woodside has doubled down on fossil fuels in the last year;
purchasing BHP’s oil and gas assets and becoming one of the top ten largest fossil fuel companies in
the world.
Woodside has chosen to proceed with the massive new Scarborough gas development, the largest
fossil fuel project to be built in Australia in a decade, at a time when the United Nations and the
International Energy Agency warn that we cannot build new fossil fuel projects if we want a safe
climate.
Research shows Woodside’s business model is based on Australia failing to meet its commitment to
the Paris agreement to keep global heating to 1.5 degrees above pre-industrial levels, and in March
the company was named by a global investor group as among “the worst climate performers in
Australia and globally.”

Absolutely understandable...and I've "you beau-ed" all those comments.

but...you show me the alternative energy source that is anywhere near close to pulling a 60ft seeding bar up & back a paddock, over the 9000ha of crop that I've got, in a 3 week period, anytime in the near, or far, future, at a cost comparable to diesel, that then goes on to produce the 25k tonne of grain that results from that effort. .And, .that then DOES go on an feed some of the current 7 odd billion mouths, and I'll start listening.

Give me all the vertical hydroponic gardens that you've got.....you are not gonna compete with that scale, except for maybe - at best a few million latte drinking surburbanites... ,,And, you certainly ain't gonna feed 9 billion mouths!!

So, the choice still remains, boys & girls, Famine , or Fossil Fuel?? Whats it gonna be??

And then consider the comparative wealth that this 1st world country has, and where it is currently coming from, that allows you to frequent the monstrous Craypot each weekend, to watch our beloved footy team play, even though its sponsored by - apparently - such a diabolical, tyrannical mob such as Woodside...

The iron ore industry royalties that allowed that to be built, weren't obtained - and aren't gonna be obtained anytime soon - by eliminating fossil fuels and all those that deliver them.

And, again, ... except for Elon's futuristic electric powered trucks, and - maybe - hydrogen powered ones in the medium to long term future , there are no current, realistic, sustainable, viable, economical alternatives to do that 'grunt work'.

It's all just platitudes & feel good stuff at the moment, by people who haven't REALLY thought about what they are asking for.

And- before- I get shot /(shut) down... I'm all for removing fossil fuels as much as possible, and feel I do everything in my power to do so, personally, and, businesswise.

But, you've gotta be 'pragmatic' here .... fossil fuel will be around for a little while yet, and yep, some of those dollars are being spent on our footy club...

And PS I have absolutely no affiliation - nor love- for Woodside, but, ...well... they have at least stuck by Freo, through some of our bad times, and, I think they deserve a tad more respect than what they are currently getting.

So hydrogen fuel cells, reverse electrolysis taking the hydrogen and creating electricity will do the job. By 2030 the cost per kilo will be $2.50, it's twice that now but was $14 only six years ago.

It gets better in terms of energy density, hydrogen is 2.46 times more powerful than diesel.

The cost curve needs to keep coming down and it will drop when rare earths used in anonodes, cathodes and catalysts are produced in greater quantities. Victoria consumes 15KmW per annum, and two thirds are renewables. I respect what you do. And you are always going to be an incredibly important part in global supply chains. But Sky News and the National Party are lying to you.

Wouldn't it be great to see a transition plan by 2030.....

reneweconomy.com.au/australia-can-slash-...ologies-report-says/

Australia could slash its emissions by 81 per cent by 2030 – almost double the 43% target recently legislated by the federal government – using little else but “off the shelf” technologies, a new report says.

The Beyond Zero Emissions report argues that the vast bulk of Australia’s emissions reduction task can be met by a combination of six technologies, all available today: solar PV, wind, batteries, electric vehicles, heat pumps and electrolysers.

Shall we talk about soil degradation and nitrate run off and how current farming practises are destroying water tables?

Well, you can, Guy, ...but know that I take just as much offence to that presumption, as you would be offended about me talking about your industry's practices when I know absolutely nothing about them....

And, yep, postulate on all that when you tuck into that which is on your dinner table later tonight, and your brekky tomorrow, and, your lunch....

Again, think of the pragmatic, viable solution to it all, that doesn't cost you - the unassuning consumer - anything more than it already does.

And, i'm not sure when or if it ever was thus, but, its been a very long time since a taxpayer has put his hand in his pocket and said - "yeah, i dont like that - even though i benefit from it - here's some money to fix the problem that i dont like...."

there's no real answer or solution for any of these dire problems we face, so let's just give up and enjoy burning fossil fuels until we all die, and poke fun at silly old Carmen and Dale and their posse along the way.

Is there a green credentials test at this year's draft combine?

The cost of continuing to do what we have is already rising and will rise even further yet. Insurance is going through the roof as climate related 'weather events' wreak more havoc every season, let alone from year to year. Trading partners will begin to exact tariffs on those countries whose greenhouse gas emissions don't meet the international agreements they signed up to.

Then there's a assumption that changing will somehow cost more... the nationsl electricity grid is borked and can't handle the growth projected over the next couple of decades. Most of the large scale power generators around the country are approaching the end of their operational life and need replacing. Some are being shut down early because the owners have woken up the reality that fossil fiuel power generation is just too expensive when the alternatives are cheaper.

Renewables are, generally speaking, inflation proof. The wind doesn't put it's prices up because the breeze don't come in off the Atlantic last month, neither does the sun get more expensive because Melbourne had (another) cloudy day.

Western Australian power regulators have struggled to handle the reality of domestic rooftop solar uptake for 20 years because they didn't want to admiot consumers were thinking with their feet and that means, Cletus... that means people are prepared to spend up when they can see the benefit for themselves and the planet.

Farmers outside of the single minded wheatbelt region of WA, with it's dominant once a year crop that needs all sorts of chemical assistance to simply stay alive let alone viable, have realised the gains to be made in either cropping or grazing underneath commercial scale solar panel arrays... the shade shelters plants aiding growth while slowing evaporation while the panels earn their keep through selling the generating capacity.

there's a massive win to be had here mate. It's just a matter of accepting the reality and getting on board.

By the way, it might be worth checking out the regenerative farming movement... huge gains to be had in productivity and cost reduction through cutting down fertiliser use and allowing as recovery cycle in the land use. Bloody awesome stuff that owes a lot of its popularity to Australian farmers and their courage in having a crack at something most thought was crazy.

You had to go there Guy...

Regenerative farming.!

We (as an industry) have been doing that for 45 years , but , suddenly, we get a 'smoke & mirrors' ag minister (WA) and, its suddenly a 'new thing'.

And she chucked a million dollars of wa taxpayer money into , just so suckers like you, can tell me that its something 'new' and 'innovative.'

Quite simplty the gains in WA agriculture - in fact - the whole of WA agriculture has revolved around your so called regenerative farming ' idea that anyone sensible knows, is, "legume rotation' and , has been well pracrictised from as far back as the 60's , with legumimous pastures, and, - from a grains industry perspective - the 70's which saw the advent of lupins.

If you wanna be a sucker for a politician's press releases , then 'go for it', but maybe have a 'real look' at what goes on here, rather tham relying on what everr comes up on google .

I feel you are an intelligent, discerning type, and have always shown it, but pleaee, don't lower your great standards by believing the 'regenerative farming hype', and bringing it to this table.....
