"Tries". You've got a shed full of them.

A carpeted shed.

The McGowan Government just committed $10 million to Woodside Energy's Hydrogen Refueller project in Rockingham.

The worst case scenario for Woodside is they pivot their greenwashing marketing to their renewable energy projects, including on our jumper.

I think they're due to be announced as the new sponsor of the right hand side of the retro jumper.

This game has entered the 2nd quarter...

www.theage.com.au/sport/afl/dockers-lege...20221018-p5bqun.html

Paywalled so I'll paste a couple of key paragraphs,

A group of high-profile Dockers fans as well as Fremantle legend Dale Kickett and the club’s inaugural football manager Gerard McNeill have called on the club to dump oil and gas giant Woodside as its major sponsor.

In an open letter to the Dockers board and president Dale Alcock, the signatories said it was no longer appropriate for a fossil fuel company to sponsor the club as the globe grappled with climate change.

“Despite claims it is trying to decarbonise, Woodside has doubled down on fossil fuels in the last year; purchasing BHP’s oil and gas assets and becoming one of the top ten largest fossil fuel companies in the world,” it said.

“As members and supporters, we are speaking out because we don’t think it is fair for these young men and women to run out with a fossil fuel company’s logo plastered on their jumpers any longer.”

Activists hope the letter will also internally rally current players in Dockers’ ranks to the cause.

Several of the Dockers’ leadership group including captain Nat Fyfe, Alex Pearce and retiring legend David Mundy have publicly signed up to The Cool Down—a group of Australian sportspeople calling for more urgent action on climate change.

Protests against petro type conglomerates are growing around the world so it's reasonable to expect something similar could happen locally. It would be a shame to see the valuable game day experience for fans disrupted, of course. Pardon me while I shank this through for a pun point, but....

the heat is on.

Not just the in AFL. Pat Cummins has also been active in this space with communication to the Australian Cricket Board highlighting his concerns with Alinta energy’s sponsorship.

We just need to be careful. I'm all for moving away from energy companies (like Woodside) who are not making legitimate efforts to transition to green energy.

But in the meantime we are all part of the problem. Alinta is making an effort.

I for one will not be around when we have fully transitioned to renewables and I agree with everything being said about why we should move as quickly as possible.
But in the meantime, the posturing of some high profile and mostly has-beens in calling for a ban on Woodside's support of our club brings to mind words like 'bite', 'hand' and 'feeds'.
I've no doubt they are genuine in their criticism but I would ask each of them to confirm they do not use a petrol driven car, never fly interstate or overseas, will not heat their homes with gas next winter and use electricity ETC ETC.
It may be a coincidence, but none of these petitioners will have a problem paying higher energy costs in the meantime.

From the ABC article:

"Dockers president Dale Alcock said players had expressed their concerns and discussed the issue with the club's executive, but there were no plans to terminate the Woodside agreement."

Good on the players.

It's a tough one. Despite the logical hypocrisy others have noted you've got to make a step in the right direction and wear the cost of that. You simply can't tread water and hope a big boat comes by.

I’m not sure where to start with your comments FreoCentral. If you take that kind of approach to this topic you are essentially saying that the only people who you will take seriously in stating their legitimate concerns about fossil fuels are those who we’d disparagingly call “preppers”. No one that I know is suggesting that we go cold turkey, the concerns are about the rate of change. Like you, I won’t see the day that we finally arrest our self destruction but future generations will rightly wonder why it’s taken so long for us to get our collective s&@t together.

I’m all for cleaning up the world environment and possibly having a positive effect on the climate change but while there are still billions of people who need gas to cook their food, I don’t see how not having Woodside as a sponsor is anything other than privileged people in an affluent country thinking they know what’s best for everyone.

I don’t know where Woodside gas goes but has anyone asked the 85% of the population in India who use gas for cooking what they think? The last time I had a cold curry was 3am in the morning after drinking too much, that was a long time ago but I recall it didn’t taste too good.

Walter, I guess it is this group of supporters I have a concern about. Sure, they have every right to voice their collective opinion in any public forum they wish. But to believe they represent the conscience of the club's supporters above every other aspect of our lives (not to mention government subsidies paid to every household out of royalties received) smacks of a little 'righteousness' to me.
Where were their objections 15 years ago when the club was financially on it's knees and we knew much less about climate change and it's effects?
There is a reason the rear view mirror is very small compared to the windscreen ahead.
That's my thoughts anyway.

Yes. This is absolute rubbish, and i am unsure why the sport it used as a platform to grandstand on, these days.?

Great that you are bringing awareness to 'an issue' , - go for it - but, bit upset you don't give a fig about offending a club sponsor that has been there with a struggling footy club through some of its worst & most laughable times...

Every bit of food you 'politically correct' eat , each & every day, relies on fossil fuel.

You can't get around that, no matter how hard you try. Especially you who doubled down on vegetarianism , for fear of cows farting....!

And, currently, there are no other viable - even remotely sensible options - to replace that fossil fuel input......

So yeah, have a crack at a fossil fuel company for sponsoring a footy club, but, I'll really start taking note when your hunger strikes begin...

Which, - I am sure - , they won't.....
