Live, produce and consume locally and seasonally, cut the profit taking multinationals and middlemen out of the equation, and maybe we can afford to drastically reduce the use of fossil fuels.

Big oil is spending plenty of advertising dollars on shooting down the idea of renewable powered farm equipment and 4wd Toorak Tractors. Call their bluff, and buy into the lesser input but more sustainable renewable future.

Sooo Woodside stopping sponsoring Freo equates to less marketing expense leading to more profit and more hydrocarbon extraction. A better thing to do would be to keep them as a sponsor but double the annual cost, less profit ergo less hydrocarbon extraction.

You know it makes sense.

Now if the players protest and want to play in the old jumper, I won't be complaining. Perhaps player protest round will be the next innovation from the AFL.

There's a few fossils around this place. That I know.

I’m just worried about what all this means for the pre-game fireworks.

Why isn't ivory tinkling Minchin among those looking over Carmen's shoulder? He would have plenty of fossil fuel parodies in the bottom draw, just ready to go.

From my feeble memory, but isn't Hydrogen the one element that can escape the Earths Atmosphere.
By definition, does this not make it a finite resource? Asking for a friend.

Oh, can someone also explain to me how we can stop our sun from expanding and getting closer to our planet, cause that may be a problem also.

I googled that out of interest... helium and oxygen atoms also escape. The process of slowly rising through the different layers that surround the planet breaks the molecules down into single atoms which can slip out the metaphorical back door.

It's a tiny fraction of the overall mass that comprises the atmosphere and if we want to question it's finite status while we're flat out using up what we can find of the left over carbon based lifeforms buried around the planet then we might be urinating into a bit of a breeze.

Ross Lyon gave us 5 years of service but most can see there was a better way and haven't looked back since he scuttled off into the sunset.

It's the same with Woodside. They might have been around a while but there's a better way.

Call it regenerative.

It’s very refreshing to see the discussion here on dockland compared to the idiotic Facebook comments on the topic. Sure Woodside have been a great sponsor of Freo for a long time but it’s time to move with the times. Pure and simple and as Shane mentioned pretty early, they are paying to use our football club to enhance THEIR IMAGE! Why? Because it’s of a benefit to them to pay millions for people to look on them more favourably than they otherwise would. If they didn’t need this enhancement they wouldn’t spend millions.

Most comprehend fossil fuels are killing the planet and causing very real climate events almost daily somewhere in the world. Fossil fuel companies are a necessary evil whilst the planet transitions to more renewable power sources. Softening the image of these mega companies buys them time to extract as much profit as they can from their assets. Freo should no longer be a part of helping Woodside. Make an announcement that they will seek a new major sponsor after their current contract expires at the end of next year. Thank woodside for their support but tell them we will be looking for a company more in line with our values as we move forward.

I just re-read everything in this thread and I'm a bit shocked that so many people have read all the commentary on this topic, and still no one you beauted my carpeted shed joke. The planet may as well burn.

It was too complex for me.
But not climate. For all the mileage Woodside get, they only pay a lousy $2mill, which is absolute peanuts for them. The board are taking dirty money And getting shafted.
The club have done a lot right and now are getting success on the ground, so sponsors shouldn’t be too thin on the ground. Why aren’t they able to make a transition? They’re either ignorant or their executive standards are slipping.

Who thinks ‘wow Woodside what a great company’ when they see their logo on our battle kit? All I think is, that’s great that they are helping pay Belly’s salary and keeping the showers hot at Cockburn.

Toyota make cars which use up a lot of fossil fuels, is it time for the AFL to dump them?

For all the poo pooing there is for large vehicles being EV, like farm equipment, fire tenders, heavy civil vehicles etc etc, the US Department of Defence, not a renowned Green organization has moved their largest machine the AMIR M1 to a hybrid with plans to completely convert. This machines fuel consumption is greater than Halpacks that do gallons to the mile. It’s responsible for approximately 1/3 of DoD’s fuel budget.

SO anyway, plenty of carbon offsets required by the AFL as a whole, I'd imagine. Let alone travelling sides like us. Collingwood are in better shape of course. Happy to see some more focus on ESG at Freo, but plenty of imperfect stuff in the world to worry about before us and footy.

In their defence Toyota is transitioning to hybrid and electrics. A lot of their advertising at the footy was for the Kruger hybrid. (Great car by the way - highly recommended!)

I reckon it’s in woodside’s interest to walk away. The amount of negative publicity they get out of this, especially in regards to projects no one knew about and how it is one of the biggest polluters in Australia wouldn’t be what they were hoping for.
