TOPIC: Mid Season Draft

I'm generally on the side of not selecting anyone at the mid-season draft unless we've almost run out of players in a position. We're doing better than previous years on the injury front (knock on wood) and don't have a pressing need for reinforcements anywhere.

The one area that has potential to be a worry is a mature key position tall forward. With Tabs durability almost non-existent and only a couple of teenagers able to help Lobb up forward, we may look at our options. With that in mind, it was interesting to see two WA key forwards receive exemptions to the mid season draft.

Zac Strom (28yo, 198cm, 103kg) was a player Freo trialed to replace Valente on the list in the pre-season before the AFL ruled he was not allowed to be picked up given he hadn't nominated for the draft. Similarly, Wade Derksen (20yo, 195cm, 90kg) who has been incredibly impressive for Peel, didn't nominated for the last draft but has shot up in recruiters eyes. Each now has an exemption for the upcoming mid-season draft and would be the front runners to join the our list in a few weeks.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

I'm all in on Derksen.

Is this what it's come to Bizkit? After the SPS catastrophe you're making names up now? Derksen indeed.

Not just Derksen, but Wade Derksen. Impressive.

The surname Derksen was first found in Switzerland, where the name Dietrich emerged in mediaeval times as one of the notable families of the region. The popularity of the name can be traced back to the major figure of Theodrich the Great, King of the Goths in the 5th century.

Just because the Blues and now OOFTIT's squandered his development, doesn't mean SPS wasn't a gun. Recruiting/drafting is the first step of the process but if a club isn't going to develop their talent, it won't matter.

Do I need to dig up your posts praising how good SPS was after Carlton beat Freo over here a couple years ago Hypen?!

He can play a bit, old Samuel. I like him not as much having a crack at you though.

Got a profile on Derksen from the AFL website.

Attributes: hard running in and under player, strong hands and highly effective with the loose groundball. Sound decision making though can hold onto the ball for too long.

Deficiencies: kicks whilst accurate lack penetration, also may not be a real person.

I've got my fingers crossed for Derksen. We can name him WD40 and hopefully can smooth things out so that we keep ticking along longer.

Retention. We need to be mindful of keeping our players at season's end. Logues name starting to be bandied about on SEN. Need to make this year count on the field.

Lets hope Derksen lets it be known hes not fond of cold melbourne winters.
I also hear hes a bit of a troublemaker.
I hear he was a real rascal at high school too
Let him slide to us please as he grows a few more centimetres

Why is a mid season draft required?

Bizkit Mid Season Draft 1 year 10 months ago #14

Bizkit
It's not required, we passed over it last year despite having players out for the season and spots open on our list.

It's a tool to replace injured players on your list however a lot of clubs use it to gain mature young talent that has started the year well.
