As far as I'm aware, these signings are treated like free agents regardless of their contract status at Freo so we get nothing in return for the girls leaving. It's a big hit and so far it would appear we've suffered the most damage at the hands of the expansion clubs (assuming the Antonio's touring Melbourne clubs facilities is a pretty strong sign they're out the door).

There are positive signs for Ash Sharp returning to Freo after missing this season due to her pregnancy, she's kicking plenty of goals in the WAFLW. I don't think signs are particularly good with Duffy who doesn't seem to be able to juggle football and work.

Gemma has been great for us but she is from the first generation of AFLW players who are rapidly being overtaken by incoming talent who have grown up playing the game. Opposition coaches have also worked out her strengths so the loss isn’t as big as it may appear. The greater challenge for us is identifying and grabbing emerging talent to cover her loss.

Pleasantly surprised when I realised this was not another thread about West Coast....
Anyone who was watching some of the quarter time talks where she copped a roast in front of the team, would anticipate that Gemma might look to reignite her game at another club. I reckon she's going to rip it up and cut up a few sides next year, good luck to her. I think she missed Duffy as a counterfoil, indeed while Steph Cain and Houghton are a significant loss the forward line did not look settled or potent at times. They need to get the mix right there, for next year.

The AFL seem to struggle to pay or organise the existing competition and number of players, let alone adding an additional 4 clubs and 120+ players. Not to mention there is a vast difference in ability between the top and bottom players.

The AFL have not allowed time for the development of girls and women who love football to catch up to the skills of the top level players and it will hurt the quality of the product. If there were still 12 teams, the number of quality players would be spread out far more evenly and the result would be quality football that is incredibly entertaining for all.

This season just gone provided many spectacles that were far below par when sides below the top 4-6 clubs were involved. I try to watch as much as I can because I love the footy and the way the girls go about it but it's definitely a struggle in many games when it's just scrappy play after scrappy play. That will only get worse in coming years (although on the flip side, more girls will get a chance to play at the level).

The rush to expand and get every men's club a women's side is bad for the AFLW in my opinion. It should have been a far slower progression as more and more girls pick up footy from a young age and play throughout their youth.

I agree Biz.

I thought the standard this year dipped compared to the previous 2 years. But overall the standard is far higher than a few years back.

I think the expansion will lead to a lower standard for 2-3 years but then the afterburners will be on.

Like women's soccer the game will evolve its own entertaining style, the goals scored by Sam Kerr for Chelsea last week were superb.
