TOPIC: The value of 19 (21)

Imagine if Geelong would be keen to swap 24& 25 for 19
And then Richmond were keen to swap 28,29&30 for 24&25.

Would you do it?

I'm thinking Motlop will slide to 40+. I had the opportunity to see a lot of PSA games where he dominated and that hasn't translated to senior WAFL form.

Yet.

Future picks are always welcome. Next year's draft has a good amount of top WA talent and a lot of talls. Unfortunately for Freo while fortunate for their development, a lot of our NGA kids are projecting quite highly so we are likely to miss out on a lot of them. The more picks we have to grab them next year, the happier I'll be.

I do prefer Johnson with our next pick but i'd be happy with a few others still available too. Goater for example shows a huge upside with plenty of Fyfe like abilities for a 190cm midfielder. He also would have none of the 'go home' factor as per this article about his WA roots.

What if we swap for the roos pick 22 and their pick 34? that gives us a chance that Motlop will still be there. The worry is Richmond having 3 picks in a row before that.

We only have a limited number of spots on our list so wouldn't be making a huge number of trades for draft picks in this draft. It's more likely we only want 2 more in the open draft this year so I wouldn't count on us making those sorts of lavish trades.

Motlop could be a chance to slip to 40 but I don't see it happening given the quality of his performances. Don't forget, not only was he a jet throughout the PSA for the last 2 years, he was great for the WA side and held a position up forward most of the season for Souths who were far from an easy side to get into. Any side looking for a small forward would see him and Butler as the far and away top 2 available in the draft. North could grab him at 22 along with plenty of others before pick 40. It just depends on what teams need, how they rate players and who's available.

If Motlop were to slip past 40, we'd have to hold another list spot open to match a bid.

Peter Bell is playing his cards very close to his chest with these comments this morning. Trying to drum up as many high offers as he can for pick 21. Hopefully we can work out a fantastic deal for ourselves.

I'm quietly hopeful a club offers a first round pick with a little slide down the draft order, something that still allows us to grab a Johnson/Goater/Knevitt while setting us up for next season.

I think we'll use it, for better or for worse.

I believe Hawks and Richmond are probably our likely targets in any pick swap, and I don't think the deal can be done for two picks in the second round because we don't have anything to partially balance the deal back the other way, just the future 4th tied to Geelong, and 62 (currently) being our next pick. I think the price will just be a bit high for those clubs. Plus Richmond have already had two shots at MJ mkII, and didn't take him. Hawks though, certainly could be foaming at the bit, seeing him still up there in lights, because they probably wailed and gnashed before choosing Ward at 7.

But I am sure we are still thinking we can convert 21 into 2 second rounders right at this point in the day.

I'd be keeping the 2 Subiaco midfielders together. Imagine the chemistry they could develop with Amiss as their target.
Forget pick-trade shenanigans. Go for who will make your team great... we need another Johnson.

From a Freo point of view, if we rated Johnson around the 10-12 mark then we'd want a pick in that range to let go of 21 which would require a future first round pick. We'd also need something in this year's draft so a slide back in the 20's and potentially getting someone else we rated highly who has slid would be a great result.

We shouldn't be that locked into Johnson if we see a number of players rated around the same point still available.

Yeah, I dunno about that.

A bird in the hand and all that....

If we can see quality on the table in front of us then just get it done. Faffing around with future picks, where the value won't be decided until after the season and any freebies the AFL want to give Carlton or GC or GWS is just gambling that next time around will somehow be better than this time around.

I'd go conservative here and get the best we can....then get games into him.

if we want to win a premiership in the next 4 years we need to load up this draft. whether that's best available at 21 or slide for a couple of picks later in the second round is up to the recruiters, but I wouldn't be sliding for a future pick, need to get the final pieces of the puzzle into the team this year.

It’s a shame that JVR is off the board, because if there were two promising WA kids sitting there – each of which address a key Freo need – then I would understand the idea of trading down for a future pick.

But he’s not, so Freo has a chance to spend pick 21 on a WA kid who was rated more highly than that, who addresses a key Freo need (it’s fair to say a midfield based around Brayshaw and Serong could use a taller midfielder in the group), and by trading down we’d be risking that for a second round pick.

It just doesn’t seem worth it to me.

You blokes are so pessimistic.

The rumours are Hawthorn and Richmond have been jostling over pick 21 to get access to Tyler Sonsie. We could slide down to one of their selections and still grab Johnson (North have plenty of young mid talent and don't need more).

We have an extremely talented player who has slipped to our pick. He's everything we need. He's from WA. Why would you do anything else?

This is an ego romp for football administrators.
