Alls I'm saying is that it would be nice to think, amongst all the goals set out by the board, one of them would be to shift away from relying on taking money to promote an industry that harms people. The same way people moved away from tobacco sponsorship or, for a couple of years at least, tried to move away from fast food in sport.

We are all-in on the junk food, the gambling and the fossil fuels at the moment, none of which are great for the community, so it would be nice to see some talk of a plan to change all that. There wouldn't be too many organisations putting out a strategic plan in 2021 who didn't address their environmental impact.

I’m pretty cynical about these sorts of things, and I’ve certainly worked at places where there is a stark difference between the espoused values and lived experience, but as far as these things go there were a few things I liked about it.

I’ve never really liked being referred to as ‘the purple army’. Firstly, it’s so generic – every other fan base is referred to as an army. Second, I don’t think a group of people choosing to come together for a social sporting event should be confused with people laying down their lives (often without a choice) in service of largely more important aims. 'Freo family' is a bit naff, but it’s more in keeping with how my friends and family meet before the game for a beer, then wander down to the stadium. As an aside, Purple Haze was at least a little novel, and I don’t know why the club didn’t lean into it more.

As Number 2 said, the anchor is back. I love the line “We love who we are and where we’ve come from.” The self-loathing during The Steves era was palpable. Sure, the anchor is just one symbol of that, but there’s been plenty of evidence that under Garlick Freo is leaning into its Fremantleness a lot more.

The term ‘best self’ is probably best left for a wellness blog, but I like that character was mentioned before ‘high-performance focus’. JLo has emphasised character in how the team operates, and I think the club is doing well to try make it a more inclusive place to work (or at least they are talking a better game about it).

I’d love to know how they go about increasing attendance on game day. It really feels like Freo is losing ground in supporters to West Coast and not gaining. Perhaps that takes care of itself if Freo starts winning games, but I really feel like the next few years is a chance to build some momentum.

I've had a plan, then another, and another and even years of plans that get all muddled up and rarely looked at in terms of success or failure. In fact, I can't even remember most (if not all) plans, to be honest I can't even remember where I wrote them down or even if I did. All I do know is that beyond staying alive and having a good time as much as possible, all my plans were a complete waste of time and as inconsequational as collecting bottlecaps.

In effect, Hypen was spot on - every footy club wants to, and aims at, winning all the time, collecting flags and having massive numbers of fat wallet supporters. That's it, period.

Enjoy the hyperbole all you want - it's a waste of time and total padded out baloney.

Go Freo!

My Strategic plan is to have at least 2 late September Saturday nights singing the dockers theme song at the crown casino Melbourne followed by a feed at the lord of the fries

It’s a good point Shane. I admired North Melbourne eschewing pokies and leaning into being a more socially progressive club on the basis they considered that best reflected their members and supporters. I still resent our club for not taking a position on the same sex marriage vote, despite later using the marriage of two of their players to drive social media engagement (I think others took the view it wasn’t for a footy club to delve into politics). It would be good for the club to be leading on these sorts of issues rather than being a laggard.

It’s probably a discussion for another day/message board, but until very recently gas was seen as an important part of transitioning away from coal and to clean energy (especially as it relates to energy grid peaking/firming). As Woodside is finding out, sentiment is changing quickly, at least as it relates to new projects. Energy storage and battery development will eventually replace gas for firming services, but that’s still a little while away yet. I don’t really blame Freo for not getting ahead of that one.

Freo just signed a new sponsorship extensions with Woodside (until 2023). It will be interesting to see if they go around again. As a sponsor Woodside has been pretty loyal to Freo. I imagine it would be difficult to drop them entirely. And as far as representing their membership goes, I’d imagine a fair percentage of Freo’s supporters work in the mining/energy sector. They’d need to be a little conscious of that.

I thought there was a plan.

It's just mission statement guff.

Any plan that announces 2 prems and increased membership and attendances as separate things to work on, has no clue. Win premierships and the other 2 things don't need a marketing department to sell dreams.

Yes, I'm sure it's so they don't offend some members.

They don't have to denounce Woodside, just stop promoting them.

The idea that a multi billion dollar company have been loyal to Fremantle is quite ridiculous. That humanising of it, creating the idea that it can be loyal to a football club, is what it gets in return for the sponsorship. Well worth the shareholders' money.

It seems a bit dumb and redundant to me. At what point was our plan not to win a premiership? Or any club's plan for that matter?

Every club is aiming to win a premiership and setting arbitrary timelines only serves to shoot yourself in the foot if you don't meet them while creating more pressure on the club, playing group and coaches.

it's unnecessary and not something we can control entirely. We could have the most perfect plan, draft the right players at every spot, develop them all perfectly, do everything right off field and still not make it because a key player or two break a leg. Or another team has done everything perfectly too and had an extra couple of good players. Or a ball bounces the wrong way and we don't win a final.

Setting this target is a marketing move that is almost certain to hurt the club.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

Down on Down, at the end of the day, when all is said and done. A lot more is said than done.

Football clubs' success is dictated by thousands of decisions throughout the year; who to draft, how to train, how to play, who to coach and captain, how to recover, how to rehabilitate..........and the quality of the decisions are not immediately visible to any of us.

The clubs that get the wins consistently make better decisions, employ capable people, who act ethically and share a common goal.

But that sounds kind of crappy and boring and not fitting of a launch with a light show. Enjoy the football and hope we are making good calls behind the scenes. I think we are.

Do you not want to create pressure on the club to win stuff?

I'm glad they've put it out there. If they do it, great. If they don't everyone will know we didn't hit our targets and they can try and work out why that is.

Admit it Shane - you just got your idea from Ted Lasso. Either that or you are moonlighting as a screen writer...

I wish I could say that I agree with many of the things that are being said on this subject, but I’m so used to reading posts that may or may not be sarcastic that I’ve lost all confidence in my ability to interpret them (plus, my overall understanding is further limited as my bird like attention span only allows me to read the shorter posts)

However, I can confidently say that you’ve all contributed something to this discussion. (and I hate hypocritical and manipulative sponsorship)
