One of my favourite times of the year is the first home game of the season, when everyone gets dressed in purple (and sometimes also red and green) to walk up the stadium together for the first time in 6 months. Perhaps it’s overstating things, but in an increasingly fragmented world I think there is real importance to society in these few remaining shared cultural touchstones - and that the person next to you could see the world completely differently to you (did you know some people still voted for the Liberal Party at the last state election?) – but on that one afternoon you’re cheering for the same team.
I feel sad for Slammen that s/he will likely miss out on that in March, and more so for Liam Jones. I think Slammen’s view is unsupported (and weird), but I feel uncomfortable leaving people outside the tent in society, and especially for a footy game.
That said, my Mum is in an aged care home, and my son has allergies (that may or may not preclude him from getting the vaccine), and I don’t want him or I to have to stop doing something we love because people like Slammen can’t appropriately assess risk.
Slammen, I’ve defended some unpopular positions on this site, but you might be on your own for this one.
