This has come up in a separate discussion however it probably deserves its own thread. In light of some recent player departures, how united is our playing group?
It will probably be impossible to know from the outside but there are signs that may indicate that it isn’t as cohesive a group as can be seen in recent premiership teams. Listening to some Demons players, their total commitment to each other is clear (as was the case at Richmond and the Bullies in recent years).
This may be a chicken and egg situation, does winning bring you closer together or is it easier to win if you are all on the same page?
Keeping players is clearly an easier proposition if there is a strong bond. I doubt that it was the biggest factor with recent departures (or Lobb’s current situation) but it may have played some role.
From my outsider’s perspective they seem like a happy enough bunch but I’m not sure they would go to war for their team, it’s leaders or for every else in the team. However, I accept that I may be over reading some poor body language during games or my own likely personal hesitation at the any proposition of following Fyfe as a captain (great player but I’m not sure about him as a relatable leader).
Clearly “culture” is a massive focus for every club. I’d suggest that we are still suffering from the The decision to move out of Freo*, the negative impact that had on our identity and it’s flow on impact to the players. Culture may also have suffered in RoLy’s latter stint. Hopefully we are on the right path now and JL can get it right during his tenure.

*Saints players still insist that moving away from Moorabbin to Seaford was the worst decision that had been made by the club as it destroyed decades of history and identity. No surprise they have now moved back the Moorabbin.

I am sure leaving Fremantle hasn't helped. If a bit more space was all they were after they could have chosen somewhere less depressing than Cockburn. Anyway, it's done now.
As for the captains role, I think now would be a good time for Brayshaw or even Luke Ryan to take it on. It won't happen though.

It seems to be de rigueur on this site to blame Lyon for everything bad that has happened to the club but the player exodus has mainly occured under Bell and Fyfe.

Let's say you had an issue where a lot of players found someone at the club a bit difficult to get on with, and you did a bunch of exit interviews and it kept coming up that players felt this person could do with being a bit less abrasive. And say you thought it was causing some problems with player retention. What you could do is bring in someone who was a bit more personable, like, I don't know, let's say Bob Murphy ... and then that person could come in on a Monday and say things like - Look, don't worry about what Peter said....

In what I see of Brayshaw, Darcy, Serong and Co gives me confidence that there is a solid core developing united in a common cause.
With reference to Melbourne, every player I’ve heard speak this year, has referenced a desire to play team footy ahead of individual performance.
Fyfe is a superstar his courage and appetite for the contest is absolutely inspiring. He is very good with the media but I can’t shake the feeling his brand is almost as important him.
Mundy seems to be more connected to the young playing group, a future with Brayshaw and Serong in leadership roles sounds promising.
I’ve been hoping that we can build a premiership team while Fyfe is at the club but if we lose Lobb it might not be until Brayshaw and Lobb fill these roles.

If you look at the players we've offloaded since JLo came to the club they've mostly had problems such as Dixon, lazy, Jesse Hogan, where does one start, Cam McCarthy, health and other problems, Jason Carter, discipline, we seem to building a core group of players who are4 united and happy to do what it takes to achieve success. They are moulded and look up to the way in which Dave Mundy, Nat Fyfe, Aaron Sandilands, Sonny Walters, Roger Hayden and Tendai Mzungu live their lives both on and off the football field and in their lives away from the club. We've also bought in administrative guys like Simon Garlick, who built a similar environment at the Bulldogs leading up to their premiership and Bob Murphy. Peter Bell has played a major part in this in also offloading the corporates Rosich, Harris and Lyon.
The guys mentioned previously who left voluntarily all had their reasons, not necessarily to do with any dodgy culture at the club and it's wrong to criticise anything about the way our recruiting team is going about their job when you listen to Serong, Brayshaw and Darcy speak so enthusiastically about our chase for a flag.

WTB on Fyfe. I read an article not long ago by Barlow saying how Fyfe spends individual time with each player getting to know them inside out. I think he played golf with Brayshaw and others, went rifle shooting or something with Bewley, surfing with others etc so I think he and Mundy are both working with the young guys. Hopefully SonSon is still working with the small forwards. The young players seem to be saying the right things as far as getting on together, fingers crossed.

I reckon Luke Ryan would ' go to war ' for his team-mates, ...surprised his name hasn't been mentioned along with the Mundy, Serong, Brayshaw types.

I'd be very happy having Schultzy, Treacy & Hodor along side me too.!

I reckon we have got a decent core of 'purple heart on the sleave wearers ' and I reckon we are doing a very good job of weeding out some of the 'iffy' ones.
