TOPIC: Rory Lobb

Hard to be critical of Lobb on this front. Came here on a promise of playing forward pretty sure with Darcy’s injuries he’s spent plenty of time leading the ruck.
If we want to offload blokes like Lobb for nicks and pay part of his salary we may as well give it away.
Does anybody else notice when play garbage forwards struggle. Was it last year he was too five for contested marks. We should offload that has been Sonny

He played forward all year and some occasional relieving ruck work. Some games he didn't ruck at all and we used Acres to relieve Darcy which was crazy.

Sorry CA I wasn’t referring to this year leading the ruck. I was talking 19 & 20

In my view it is all to do with his partner wanting to move to Melbourne for work and be close to her family. He is 28… let him go… I would be trying to do a deal with Richmond for pick 15, 26 or 28, or with the bulldogs for pick 17… I would pay $250k of his wage… only has about 3 years left

That's crazy and stupid - pay a quarter million a year to an opposition player?

Unless you're doing it Jimmy the Greek style.

"Here's a quarter of a million dollars, Jeremy. Be a shame if you stopped taking intercept marks."

Yeah come to think of it.. it is stupid… paying someone wage… but I would try trade him to the bulldogs or Richmond

If it enables us to bring in someone who fills the role, is happy to work with the coach and rest of the team and it helps us win a premiership then it's money well spent. Rory's partner hasn't headed east yet so I can't see him being happy with that situation next season so it makes sense to be proactive and solve a potential problem before it happens and keep everyone happy.

Interesting reading in The West online where it's said that Rory would actually be willing to take a pay cut to get to the right right destination so all this talk of us making up part of his salary could be irrelevant.

If this goes the way he apparently wants then as has been stated we are going to be an experienced big man short in our forward line. An often injured Tabener, second year Treacy and a new recruit or two is going to really test our already non scoring forward line.
So where to? It's been awhile since we've had roman numerals.....
i. Cox returns to the forward line? Problem being without Hamling to cover for that we're too short down back.
ii. Try and trade for a key forward? Problem is there aren't any really good ones on offer.
iii. Pick up an experienced forward in the draft? Keitell gets a regular mention here.
iv. Fyfe plays forward more often. But it hasn't worked previously and he's stated that he wants to return to the midfield.
v. Darcy to spend more time forward. He's too valuable in the ruck and Meek isn't that good a back up.
vi. A fit Sturt would be helpful. Yes, but that's becoming quite concerning. Three games in two years or something similar?

If we didn’t have Lobb, then a Lobb type would be exactly the sort of player we’d be looking to trade in. There’s your problem right there.

Anyone who thinks moving Rory Lobb on makes Freo better is off their chops.

We can’t just replace Lobb with another forward, who does the back up ruck work, Tabs, Treacy, Acres? Meek is no forward, we got a sample of that this year.

Edit: Benning will need at least a couple of years development before he is deployed in that role at AFL level on a permanent basis. It was looking like perfect timing due to Lobbs two years left on the contract. Now it would leave a massive hole in our list.

Putting aside my views on his level of commitment in certain games Mushy, please come out of your cellar and look at the facts. His partner has been offered a job opportunity in the East and given the likelihood that she will move then he also is looking to an opportunity to move to where she is. We are quick to take advantage of local talent becoming homesick and wanting to return to the West as in the case of Jordan Clark and possibly in the case of Lachie Neale so we have to accept that there is life outside of football. If we can turn these to our advantage then we are on a winner however if it works in reverse and a contracted player or otherwise sees other possibilities in life then we may have to respect their wishes and make the best of a changed situation.
This is not a case of trying to offload Rory, it is a case of making the best of a situation that could get worse if we don't address it now.
